What a gem of a place located right on the river and only a short, free kayak ride to the lake. Quiet, tranquil and beautiful gardens; beautifully decorated and appointed lodge common areas; very comfortable room; well-designed bathroom; and so much more. The service by everyone at the Lodge was impeccable, friendly and caring. The guided walks were very informative and enjoyable, and the laundry facilities were excellent and easy to use. And…saving the best for last…the breakfast, lunch and dinner meals were absolutely superb in their variety, presentation, service and taste! Over a month later, we are still talking about the food! :-) We look forward to returning in the future and highly recommend Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki!

The lodge owners make the visit all the more special; hotel staff are pleasant and accommodating. What an amazing place! The nature hikes, the kayaking, the lake, the PENGUINS, the glow worms, the Tasman Sea, the delicious food, the cold beer (I like the 1812)!
We stayed here two nights with Backroads and I’d go back in a second. Very nice laundry facilities and a drying room for my wet boots (one hike involved walking through a stream four times). The lounge/meeting area had many books to read about the history, flora and fauna in the area. So very comfortable, we didn’t spend much time in our room!
I could just live here. But, I’d need better wifi :-)

Anne and Gerry looked after us so well. Everything was just brilliant. The food, the room and all the guided activities. My main aim here was to see the Fiordland Penguin and so we booked the 3 night Spring special package. Gerry took us down to a secret location and we spent 2 hours with the penguins. A truly magical time watching them. With a 400mm lens I was able to get full frame shots of the penguins. We enjoyed kayaking on Lake Moeraki, and walking the trails around the lodge. Try the packed picnic lunch and you can sit outside with the birds and enjoy the place. Other activities we enjoyed were the Glow-worm and stargazing walk, and the Hector's Dolphin beach walk. If you want to find New Zealand birds you should visit this lodge at least once.

We stayed in a rainforest view room for 3 nights including daily dinner and breakfast. The rooms and bathrooms are excellent. Each meal was beautifully cooked.
Wilderness lodge is located in the heart of the south west New Zealand world heritage area on the shores of Lake Moeraki and by the Moeraki River. It is surrounded by lowland temperate rainforest. The lodge plays an active part in conservation . It generates it's own power through a hydroelectric generator. You can go kayaking, walking in the forest or to the beach. We went with Gerry on a guided nature trip to see the nearby colony of up to 30 pairs of Fiordland crested penguins. Another day we went on a HARD TRIP! It is a challenging walk/climb. It starts with a rainforest walk to the beach. We then walked along the pebble beach to scramble over volcanic boulders. We saw several fur seals at close range before finally clambering up a steep 400' rainforest track. On our last evening we went for a stroll to see numerous glow-worms and giant eels.
What an incredible place to stay. Brilliant memories, lovely place and people.

We will definitely return here. The lodge was lovely, our room had a view of the river and beautiful native birds visiting the kowhai trees. The food was to a very high standard and the often disappointed vegetarian in our group found their meals to be excellent as well.
Gerry and Ann, the founders of the lodge, were truly amazing hosts, a fountain of knowledge, passionate about the star of the show, the nature, as well as being extremely accommodating and very easy to get along with. We were there at the end of September and saw penguins and the resident sea elephant. It was still low season and while the rainforest was getting it's fair share of rain we managed to take our trips during sunny breaks between downpours. It is definitely worth staying at least a couple of nights so you can be sure to see some sun. The sandfly population was mercifully low at this time of year. This is an experience not to be missed, an expertly run tourist operation in a spectacular part of New Zealand.
