You are stepping into the 15th century, its real. We are so grateful to the owners that they keep this old medieval castle in tact. You can experience a true medieval stay in Cloonacauneen Castle. It is small, but cozy and warm. We live near by, so we didn't stay in the castle. My husband Niall and I had Sunday lunch here. It was delicious. You should try Baked Salmon if you are in to seafood, it was tender and juicy. All of the staff are very friendly. We had a great time in the Bar chatting with Ashling. The owner Bridg showed us around and pointed to a few historical spots in the castle such as where the priest usually escaped from or how uninvited guests were treated. This is a place of history. When you read a bad review of this place please see the date of the review. The castle was renovated and has a new owners. Also be aware of the size of the rooms. You are in the 15th century castle! not in a modern style hotel. Most of the rooms are en suite and have four poster beds to make your stay comfortable. Forget about size, enjoy the atmosphere! This castle is a unique treasure from the past. You can see my video of Cloonacauneen Castle on our Youtube Channel - Celtic Spirit of Ireland (link in our profile). We definitely recommend this place for a stay or lunch/dinner/coffee.
We stayed here two nights last week. The castle has 400+ years of character and charm. I was very sick and slept in the room all night and most of one day... it was the best sleep i had while in Ireland. Laura was a dear and checked with my girlfriend to see if i was ok. She was a warm and splendid host. Their "Irish" breakfast hit the spot both mornings.
I proposed to my now fiance' upstairs by the fireplace. The rooms are "cozy", but its a castle and I didn't expect large rooms like the movies. The finishes /decor in the rooms felt as if a lot of thought went into it.... i can truly appreciate the charm.
We walked around the castle before they had a big pigroast event. Its a great place for events and lots of parking on site. It was relatively quiet even with so many guests.
Location was good, easy to get in and out of town and an easy taxi ride to galway. You can't walk to downtown but who would want to stay in a castle in a downtown area!?
I would like to have seen two small things; 1. A rope across the base of the stairs stating "Hotel Guests Only" to keep the event goers from going upstairs to the separate "hotel" space. 2. Instant hot water in the showers up stairs. In the morning they're great but I tried to take a shower in the eve and it was chilly.
I'd go back in a heartbeat, I appreciate the people who work there and the effort that was put into our stay.Show less
My wife and I stayed with another couple for 2 nights in the historic castle. We had an incredible time. Laura, the manager I believe, was such a wonderful gem. Just delightful. She accommodated our every wish with a genuinous rarely seen. The chef provided us exceptional food and was a delight to talk with. Ashley at the pub downstairs also was a treat. Great service and lots of fun. We met the locals at the pub. They were most friendly and we had alot of fun. Special hello to Papa,Johno, Mike aka(PJ) or Papa Jr.,and Maddy along the rest of the gang. We will be back for sure. Thank you all so much. Ps. The tower room in the castle is awesome.
We had our daughters christening reception at Cloonacauneen Castle yesterday.
Couldn't have been happier with the day. When we arrived we were welcomed by Laura and her team and shown to the function room which was beautifully decorated.
The food was out of this world, tasty hot dinners with no lack of sides and fresh vegetables. Service was excellent. Once we had finished our meal, we were not rushed, and I was told we could stay in the function room for as long as we wanted. The kids enjoyed themselves playing in a safe and appropriate space at the back of the room.
Highly recommended Cloonacauneen Castle for hospitality and great food. Excellent communication on booking the reservation.
Many thanks to Laura, Bríd and team.
