Untouristic Guide for Buenos Aires

92%
Found this guide helpful

Buenos Aires is pretty well known in the touristic world, so it´s not new for everyone that many business go through this large city. I´ve worked for several years in different hotels and found that many recommendations have their personal interests involved, such as commisions and stuff like that. I would like to offer personal experiences from someone who lives and understand the culture because is one of them. I hope you enjoy it... and if you don´t at least you know is only for the joy of seeking someone else´s hapiness.

Aliquisnemo's City Tips

  • I wouldn´t recommend to take any Tango Show. If you like tango and want to watch a show, skip the dinner, just get the show. Dinners are pretty bad in most of the places.
  • Nowadays and until december 2015 we have two different rates for exchange dollars. One is the "official" (dollars worth less) and the other one is the "blue" one. Ask for guidance.
  • Be safe. It is a large city and there are places you shouldn´t visit without knowing the language. Not a big deal, just be cautious.
  • Take "radio" taxis just in case. If you have any problem, at least you have someone who would listen and maybe help you with any complaint.
  • It would be a good thing to get a "SUBE" electronic card, that works for every public transportation in the city. Easy to get (ask around), easy to recharge (subway, mostly).
  • Tips are not included anywhere. If you have a fine service %10 is ok. You increase your amount as glad you feel about that.

Argentina as a country started next to the river, where San Telmo is located. Is a wonderful place that you should visit during the day (because during the night is not that safe). Many museums, ancient bars and a colonial atmosphere. History itself recreates with life.

Plaza Dorrego is a park. is one square with a lot of space that during weekends many sellers offers many different items, all very argentinian. You would find from singers selling and singing their stuff to paintors and antiques from last century.

Once you visited San Telmo, in order to continue with historic places, you are suppose to visit this cafeteria. Get a coffee, some "medialunas" (croissants), or pan dulce (I don´t know, just try it). "Chocolate caliente" (I dont need to translate that) also is a good one. It is ancient in many ways, but it´s a place worth visiting if you would like to understand argentinian culture. You see, in there people would gather to talk and interact without any cell phones.

It is located underground and you should make a reservation if you go near the weekend (except for sundays night). Get the cassoulet as a starter and the lamb as a main. Medium rare, because medium would be dry for the kind of meet it is. They have many catena wines: I love the DV Cabernet Malbec, or the Malbec Malbec.
