Museum Guide for Atlantic City

Most people visit Atlantic City for its casino and boardwalk scenes, and "arts and culture" tends to be of the music and comedy show variety. However, there are a handful of museums to add to your visit here, including several with an interesting historic focus.

Stephen C's City Tips

  • Adult beverages from the casino servers are free if you are playing, but remember to tip.
  • The boardwalk rickshaws are a longstanding tradition in the AC. Give one a try!
  • There are a few casinos and hotels that are located away from the boardwalk. To reach them, you can use the Atlantic City Jitney, which stops regularly at most casinos.

Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museums can be found around the world, and generally provide some quirky entertainment for tourists. Atlantic City's Ripley's Believe It or Not! Odditorium, located right on the boardwalk, features the world's smallest production car, a roulette table made of jellybeans (more than 14,000 of them!), and a 'Laser Maze Challenge,' where you can test you skills at climbing through a web of lasers.

The Atlantic City Historical Museum is located on the 1913 Garden Pier. It's small, but it tells fun local tales, from the horse who used to perform a high dive at Steel Pier to the story of Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson, the corrupt Prohibition-era politician who inspired Steve Buscemi's character in 'Boardwalk Empire.' There are plenty of vintage photos and cool artifacts on display, too.

Absecon Lighthouse has stood at the north end of Atlantic City since 1857. At 171 feet, it is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest in the U.S. Although the lighthouse is no longer operating, visitors can climb its 228 steps to be rewarded with breathtaking views.

You won't find any big sea creatures here, but the Atlantic City Aquarium provides a fun place for kids to touch (small) sharks as well as sea urchins and a variety of other creatures. Its location in the Ocean Life Center Complex at Historic Gardner's Basin is a nice diversion from the casinos, too.

The only fine art museum in the region, Noyes Museum of Art is located about 10 miles from Atlantic City, in a pleasant lakeside setting near the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. Here you'll find a nice collection of American fine and folk art, including a good selection of regional artists. Closer to 'home,' the museum also operates the Noyes Arts Garage at Stockton University, in AC's new Arts District. The Arts Garage, a project to that focuses on enriching the community and support emerging artists, is the site of artist studios, galleries, and a satellite gallery of the Noyes Museum — in addition to shops, a café, and a classroom studio.
