Monica U's City Tips

  • Most of the restaurants in Queenstown serve dinner from 5pm and close around 9pm.
  • If you are into wine, ask your server for his/her recommendation of a local New Zealand wine. The Sauvignon Blanc is excellent!
  • The dress code is fairly casual in most restaurants, although some of the most upmarket ones (such as The Bunker) expect you to dress up.

    Monica U Says:

Michelin-awarded chef Josh Emett took inspiration from everything southern and created a place that provides a real 'Kiwi' experience. I love the huge back-lit image of a Rata forest and the use of native timber to off-set the ultra-modern industrial components of glass and steel in the decor here. The menu changes regularly to best utilize the seasonal produce, sourced from local growers and producers. I can't fault any dish here!

    Tips
    • The cheese trolley served table-side is a fantastic touch.
    • They serve a great-value three-course lunch menu, which is worth trying.
    • If you're a couple, try the lamb shoulder for two people — it's an organic, succulent treat!
    • Try the Rata goats cheese profiteroles and cinnamon oysters.

Fishbone is a true 'local institution' hidden at the top of Beach Street that has been part of the dining scene of Queenstown for over 24 years. The local fishermen deliver the catch every day to Chef Darren Lowell, who grows his own produce throughout the year. You can handpick your fish from the local tank and everything is exceptionally fresh and cooked with a New Zealand twist!

    • One of my favorite dishes is the Cardona Merino Lamb roasted for 12 hours.
    • And when in New Zealand... their "happy hen pavlova" is to die for — organic eggs and freshly-picked passion fruit, kiwi, fruit berries, and cream.

There are burgers in this world, and then there is Fergburger — I have never been so enamored with a burger joint! They have burgers for fish lovers, pork lovers, New Zealand lamb lovers, veggie-tofu lovers, chicken lovers, deer lovers, and even falafel lovers. The king, of course, is the prime New Zealand ribeye steak. Fergburger has certainly won its place in Burger heaven!

Botswana Butchery feels like you have stepped into the middle of a decadent African safari, along with Zebra-print chairs and meat cleavers on the wall!. They specialize in meat and seafood, and have some of the best views of Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown. My favorite dish is the fried hog pulled pork, which comes with blackberries and parmesan, on top of the usual apple and cabbage slaw.

For a small beach cafe, Vudu Cafe has the best coffee in Queenstown. Organic free range eggs and bacon are sourced from the neighboring farms — and preserves are made in-house. The organic oat and chia bircher muesli is fantastic too.

Inspired by the look and feel of a Mexican Hacienda, Coyote Grill has done an impressive job in creating not only a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, but also food that tastes like it comes from Southern Mexico! The spices and chilies are imported directly, and you'll find fresh, local ingredients such as preservative-free New Zealand-made flour tortillas and daily fish from the local fishing boats. The pork carnitas are a treat!

If you want to feel like the 'cool kid' in town, head down to Cow Lane in Queenstown and, behind a hidden door with no street sign, lies one of the most romantic fine-dining places around, complete with a killer cocktail list. The szechuan peppered Angus pure beef tartare is marinated to perfection, and if you are feeling adventurous definitely try the venison main dish.

Originally a Victorian bathhouse built in 1911, this beautifully intimate tapas restaurant is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and offers only eight tables. You couldn't ask for a more romantic location: the views are spectacular. Go for the view and stay for the selection of fantastic shareable bites of seafood and grilled meat, as well as the shared platters.

Roaring Megs Restaurant has been at the forefront of the 'fine dining' food scene in Queenstown since 1981. I am usually not an advocate of fancy restaurants, but this dining experience was one of my best in Queenstown. Excellent service, the most delicious 'rack of Canterbury lamb' I've ever tasted, and great views. If you are a lamb lover you need to try Roaring Megs!
