KiwiTraveller43's City Tips

  • If skiing, always hire a 4 wheel drive car, as it is no fun fitting chains to a 2 wheel drive
  • When skiing, hire boots and skis for 2-3 days in Queenstown, and take them to the ski-fields. Much better than queuing up each day at the ski resorts
  • Stay centrally if you can, so you can walk most places

This is my favourite resort near Queenstown. It is about a one hour drive, and the scenery is spectacular crossing the Crown Range. Don't attempt the drive in bad weather, and hire a 4 wheel drive in winter. The ski field is big, with a great variety of runs for all levels. When finished skiing, stop at the Cardrona tavern back on the main road for a great drink in an historic building

This ski-field has a lot going for it. Very close to Queenstown, and an easy drive compared to the other fields in the area, it is possible to ski in the morning then drive to the airport and fly home in the afternoon. The facilities are great, fast chairlifts, and a big, efficient cafe. The ski area is huge, with a real variety of mostly intermediate trails to try. It is a very popular ski-field, for a good reason.

It is quite a long, hair-raising drive to The Remarkables. The ski-field is quite small, and for a good skier you have soon skied it all. I would recommend Coronet Peak and Cardrona for good skiers

A visit to Queenstown wouldn't be the same for us without a meal at Amisfield. We always have the Trust the Chef, and we always love it. My wife is gluten free, which is never a problem, and the 4 courses are always amazing. It is nice not knowing what you are going to get - the anticipation makes it better. There are usually two starters, then a seafood course, then a red meat course. Everything is perfect - the food, the wine, the ambience. For $60 for four courses it is great value.Make sure you go here if you can!

Very impressed with this restaurant. The interior design is great, driftwood and other rustic themes on display, plus a wonderful mural on the wall making a great statement. The menu is small, 4 or 5 choices for each course, and the descriptions leave you in some doubt about what you are actually getting. I went for the crispy duck tongues as an entree (as you do). The other people in my group all turned up their noses, but when they arrived, and I shared them around, they all had some and thought they were great. The John Dory topped with pigs tails was excellent, but my wife found her Tarakihi "sous vide" a little bland. Certainly worth a visit for the unusual foods on offer.

Always highly impressed with the quality of the food, the great service, and the ambience of this tapa's bar. Even more impressed with the price when it was time to pay - exceptional value. Being tapa's the servings are small, and to be shared, but you don't need many as the food is so flavoursome and filling

This is where we stay by choice. Very centrally located, you can walk anywhere within Queenstown. Rooms are a good size, clean, and well fitted out. They are not luxury apartments, but are a very good standard. You will need to book about 6 months in advance to get in during the peak ski season. There are also some larger, more luxurious apartments which are really nice - we were upgraded once!

You can walk up the road to the start of the hiking trails, or drive up to where the trails start. It is about a 20 minute walk to reach the start of the trails, and if you only walk that far you will get great views of Queenstown (and some very flash houses). There is a loop track that takes just over an hour, and longer trails can also be taken. The loop is easy walking. Great to keep fit in summer.
