Monica U's City Tips

  • Brisbane City Council has two tip shops that are open every weekend and sell quality used, recycled, and second hand products that have been salvaged before going to the landfill.
  • Australia's Boxing Day (December 26th) is the best shopping date for massive discounts all over Australia, akin to Black Friday in the USA.
  • The weekend markets can get pretty crowded between 11:00am and 2:00pm, so if you would like to avoid the crowds, get there early.
  • James Street
    Gift & Speciality Shops
    Monica U Says:

Once an inner-city industrial place, James street, with its host of specialty shops, has evolved to become 'The' place to be for emerging designers in Brisbane, and a place to attend high-end events.

You can check out more than 700 stores around Queen Street Mall, but if you are looking to get the designer dress, shoes, bags, or shades that you really really want, head down to Wintergarden, a series of luxury brands located inside the HIlton Hotel in the CBD (Central Business District.)

For something different to do on a Friday night, the Southbank Markets are very entertaining. They are on the edge of the city, right next to the river, and feature stalls with handcrafted jewelry, art, and gourmet food. You can always find that special gift here!

I am not a big fan of factory outlets, but once every 3 months I do a trek to this DFO by the airport to update my underwear, sheets, and towels. There are more than 100 brands under one roof, and if you do your homework and get to know the collections, you will be able to spot at least one bargain.

My mother collected antiques all her life, so it is no surprise that I feel drawn to the opportunity to browse the enourmous collection of antiques here. Do plan on spending a few hours just looking around at all this fascinating stuff. My latest purchase here? A vintage 60s dress for a birthday party.

Waking into this tiny boutique, the lovechild of Leah, a dreamy Brisbane girl that went to London and fell in love with small designers and thrift stores, feels like stepping into an inner sanctum of beautiful things. Think Papinelle sleepwear, pretty notebooks, and small designer objects from Etsy. I always find a treasure here.

In my opinion, there are very few places were artists can get together to showcase and sell their arts and crafts. In. cube8r is one of them. It started back in 2007 and now it is home to more than 90 artists that create a wide range of items, including hand-painted T-shirts, bags, hand-made soaps, hand-made silver jewelry, ceramics, and pottery!

I love the creativity of the smaller designers in this market. The hand-made backpacks ('Yak Paks') are on my list of favorite items, and the range of cosmetics from Wild Nature is top-notch. Great for fruits and veggies during the week, and a lovely place by the river on Saturday nights.
