Did you know that Sweden is one of the largest countries in Europe in terms of landmass, but one of the smallest in terms of population? In other words, no matter where you go in Sweden, there will likely be more trees than people! If you do, however, fancy some coffee and shopping with your outdoors holiday, Stockholm is the place to be. Sweden's capital manages to find the right balance between being a big city, whilst not compromising on nature. This guide will help you find just the right places to visit in and around Stockholm if you want to experience Sweden's beautiful nature without having to go too far into the countryside.

cafespecific's City Tips

  • The Stockholm public transport card (Access card) not only works on the subway (metro) and buses, but also on some of the ferries.
  • There is no real need for a car if you plan to stay in Stockholm. Public transport usually gets you anywhere you need to go in the city center and around its suburbs.
  • Swedish winters can be fierce and usually mean that it's not only very cold, but also that it's dark for most of the day. If you plan an outdoor holiday in Stockholm, go either during summer or spring.

One of Stockholm's most popular attractions is the Skansen Open-Air Museum, which is not only a common destination for tourists, but also for locals. The museum offers an authentic collection of old traditional Swedish houses and shops, with their original furniture and decoration, and can almost make you feel like you have traveled back in time.

    Tips
    • Entry prices vary throughout the year. It's cheapest to go between January and March (when it's really cold) and most expensive on Midsummer day.
    • Take the little mountain train to go either up to the museum, or down on your way back. It's great fun!
    • There are plenty of opportunities to eat and have coffee at Skansen.
    • You can buy nice handcrafted souvenirs in the old shops which are part of the exhibition.

Stockholm and its beautiful islands are just made to be explored by boat. (However, the city - scattered over 14 different islands - also impresses with its vast number of bridges, making it also possible to navigate even without a boat.) For those wanting to get onto the water, Stromma Under the Bridges offers you the possibility to experience Stockholm from a different angle and is definitely worth it if you have enough time.

    • There are audio guides in many different languages, including Mandarin, Spanish and German.
    • This is a "fika" friendly cruise, meaning that there is coffee and cake on board.

Did you know that there is a beach in Central Stockholm? Just northwest of Stockholm's southern island Södermalm, there is a small island called Långholmen. The island has a dark past, formerly housing Stockholm's central prison, and the place were Sweden's last execution took place in 1910. It has undergone a dramatic change for the better and today is known for its beach and beautiful park. Many Stockholmers come here during the summer for swimming and picnics.
