Chris O's City Tips

  • Keep in mind that Lisbon is a very hilly city. Wear comfortable shoes when hitting the streets.
  • Public transport is great in Lisbon. Indeed its trams and funiculars are among the city’s most popular attractions. Get the Lisboa Card for inclusive rides across the system.
  • A tip of 10% of your bill is customary when eating out at restaurants.

    Chris O Says:

For an indulgent and custardy taste of Lisbon (although technically you’ll be in the bordering town of Belem), start your day with a breakfast of Pasteis de Belem at this classic institution. There are arguably better 'natas' to be had around town, but this place is their traditional home.

    Tips
    • Go early to avoid the crowds (tour buses stop here).

Commissioned by King Joao II to defend the mouth of the Tagus river and to serve as the ceremonial gateway to Lisbon, this ornate tower — which seems to hover just above the water — is an important symbol of Portugal’s rich maritime history, and an impressive reminder of its once expansive empire.

Who knew public transportation could be so evocative, or that a boxy little tram could navigate such tight and windy city streets? A ride on Lisbon’s iconic Tram 28 proves that the fun is indeed in the getting there.

    Good for
    • History Buff
    • Thrifty Traveller

    Tips
    • The 28’s route is the longest of any tram in Lisbon, following a loop that passes popular hotspots such as Alfama and the Castelo de Sao Jorge.
    • Buy your tram tickets from kiosks located around town or at metro stations.
    • To make the best use of the tram, take it uphill.
