Gary07734's City Tips

  • Walks around the canal area at night are peaceful and scenic.
  • Everything in Bruges is easy walking distance, and it's quiet backstreets are some of the nicest areas to walk. No need for public transport.

Simply the best chocolate I've ever had. Tried most of the main chocolate shops in Bruges, and elsewhere but this is hands-down the best. I believe the shop often sell their chocolates to Michellin starred restaurants - fancy truffles, unusual flavours and lot of 'standard' truffles etc. Don't miss! The 5cm thick slabs of chocolate are epic. Fancy truffles are one thing, but a paving slab of chocolate is something else.

    Tips
    • The slabs of chocolate come by country, try a few hundred grams of a variety - but definitely try the white chocolate. It's nothing like commercial white chocolate.
    • For novelty gifts they do wacky flavours of truffles; curry, wasabi, bacon, even cannabis.

Great central base for Bruges, literally just behind the Main Square and Bell Tower. Small-ish rooms and fairly standard hotel but the location can't be beaten and really good value.

Medium size museum with an interesting mix of modern wings and older buildings (and an annoyingly squeeky floor). Lot's of Dutch / Belgian art if you're into that kind of thing.

Peace and quiet in a church just a few minutes from the main square. Architecture is impressive and multilingual signs for tourists.

    Tips
    • It's easy to miss because it isn't a stand-alone church but rather a part of other buildings. There is a sign and entrance in the corner of the square just look for the stairs.
    • There's a beer shop next door from the superb Struise - not the cheapest Belgian beers but generally excellent and must-try (Pannepot is amazing).

Small, pretty square just 5 minute walk from the Main Square and centre. A few nice restaurants and a good starting point for a circular walk around the canals and back to the center.

The whole centre is beautiful and calm to walk around by day or night, would highly recommend coming back late evening to wander the canals and back-streets admiring the architecture after dinner. Followed by a few Belgian beers.

Small chocolate shop just off the main square (they have another, posher looking outlet near the Chocolate Line), friendly and pretty cheap compared to some of the other places. Great chocolates - don't buy from the big name brands go here!
