Emanuele A's City Tips

  • Tips are not mandatory but are appreciated. Around 10% of the bill at restaurants is a good average.
  • The metro stations are one of the artistic parts of Naples, especially Toledo Station. Take your time to admire the architecture.
  • Most of the places mentioned in this guide are in the center of the city, and could be covered in a single day.

    Emanuele A Says:

Esoteric symbolism and sacredness are the main players in this square. As the story goes, the palace, Sangro di San Severo – located here in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore – is haunted by the ghosts of Maria d’Avalos and her lover, who were murdered by Maria's jealous husband, Carlo Gesualdo. Take in the many sights of the square and its buildings, before tasting the best coffee in Naples at the ancient Scaturchio cafe.

    Emanuele A Says:

Cimitero delle Fontanelle is one of the most fascinating places of worship in the city. A sense of sacredness is everywhere at this cemetery – located in this little hillside in the Materdei neighborhood. The three long naves of the cemetery are home to the skulls and bones of more than 40,000 victims of the plague, who died between 1600 and 1800.

This is a very special pizzeria, with waiters that are real showmen. The environment is truly authentic, meaning that the fruit is served in a toilet bowl and laughs are guaranteed. Most tourists don't know this place, but every Neapolitan does. Eating here is guaranteed to lift your mood, promising plenty of smiles along with memorable dishes.

    Emanuele A Says:

San Martino is home to two of the most beautiful monuments in Naples: the Certosa di San Martino, and Castel Sant’ Elmo. Located on the hill of Vomero, one of the highest points of the city, the castle hosts an interesting permanent museum exhibition entitled 'Napoli Novecento,' featuring works inspired by the city and its people. The setting of San Martino gives you a breathtaking view, and is a great hang-out spot thanks to the presence of numerous bars and cafes.

Chiesa della Santissima Trinita dei Pellegrini
Sacred & Religious Sites, Churches & Cathedrals
    Emanuele A Says:

This church remains virtually unknown to many (as access is only possible through the hospital), yet this architectural marvel has one of the most beautiful facades ever made. The combination of its unusual architectural style and numerous beautiful paintings which hang inside, definitely make it a very special church. Situated at the heart of the urban historical center makes it a convenient spot to discover too.

This small street corner contains many treasures, many of which are yet to be discovered even by the locals! While many Neapolitans are likely to have heard of this place – the Church of Saints Marcellino and Festo – its cloister is a pearl of rare beauty whose existence is unknown to most. Marvelous fountains and a garden of immense beauty are just waiting to be discovered here!

This street is a thriving, central thoroughfare located in the historic center, Spaccanapoli, and as well as being an authentic representation of the 'real' Naples, it is also home to two of the most popular pizzerias in town (Sorbillo and Di Matteo.) Look out for the piece of graffiti by famous street artist Banksy, which completely encapsulates the religious and sacred spirit of its location!

Would you like to get a taste of the real Neapolitan lifestyle? Wandering the alleys of the Pignasecca Quarter will give you a feel for authentic daily life in the city, with all its sights, sounds, smells, and even laundry hung out to dry! Take time to explore the traditional restaurants and corner markets, and enjoy the continuous comings and goings of students and vendors, which make this quarter crowded, dynamic and lively.
