JannyB12144's City Tips

  • Use the ATMs as needed to keep supplied with cash. We never bring a huge chunk of money with us anymore. Just use common sense around ATMs.
  • Go spring or fall, not in the dead of summer. Summer there is beastly hot, and in August, everyone in Madrid pretty much leaves for their own vacay.
  • Stay central! Anywhere near the major museums, the Plaza Mayor, the Puerta del Sol, the Palace, the fun places you'll go to on foot...again and again and again.
  • Get from Barajas relatively hassle-free and at a fair price, reserving a shuttle van service. Cheaper than a cab and they'll haul your luggage. They pick up to return as well.

This is a great place to hang out at one of the many outside tables to eat, drink, or just relax. It's lively, pretty, and when it's chilly out they even have outdoor warmers to keep you comfy! There's a variety of tapas places and vinotecas to choose from when the weather is bad or in winter all around the perimeter of the Plaza.

Bustling hub of historic Madrid. It is supposedly the geographic center of Spain and it is so marked on the sidewalk. It is always crowded with people chatting, shopping, demonstrating, hanging out. Off of it is major shopping (Corte Ingles, FNAC, lots of smaller shops, places to eat and drink., nearby is the Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via. El Madrono, a statue of a bear and a tree, is symbolic of Madrid.

Just in the center of the Paseo Castellano and is lovely day and night, as is the Palacio de Comunicaciones, which is right there and is gloriously beautiful and is actually a huge post office. Cibeles and also Neptune are central to Madrileños celebrating New Years Eve and the favorite futbol teams' victories.

Right off the Plaza Mayor. This mercado has been around for many years as a fresh market with meats, cheeses, fish, vegetables, candies, sweets.
