For lovers of good food, Majorca has it all – from scrumptious traditional local delicacies and tapas to highly sophisticated gourmet Mediterranean cuisine. Perhaps of most interest here are the quirky culinary shops and delicatessens, as well as the olive oil and cheese producers that open their doors to visitors throughout the year. And of course, a trip to Majorca would not be complete without paying a visit to one of the island’s lively food markets, bursting with fresh organic vegetables, olives, cheeses and cold cuts.

Anna N's City Tips

  • Majorca has an excellent island-wide network of buses and trains – remember to download timetables in advance and bear in mind that rural routes don't run late at night.
  • In Palma and other municipalities, avoid dining in bare-it-all beach attire – fines are now issued for inappropriate wear.
  • Few restaurants and bars include service charges on bills, so do leave a tip when the service warrants it.

This much-loved historic grand café in the heart of Palma's old town has become an institution. Locals are even willing to queue at the weekend to savour its dense and rich aromatic hot chocolate, accompanied by mouthwatering, light and fluffy ensaimadas (Majorca's famed spiral shaped pastries).

This relatively new self service food emporium on Avinguda Jaume III is the brainchild of Helmut Clemens, an enlightened polyglot German who has lived in Majorca for many years and developed a love of good, traditional Majorcan fare. The food is simple, freshly made and includes many local flavours and ingredients in its variety of creative salads and soups. There's also a wonderful daily selection of freshly made organic cakes, ensaimadas and other pastries.

La Boveda attracts a great many locals as well as tourists because tapas is its business, and the standard is invariably very good. All the favourites are served here, including exceptionally good jamon iberico and serrano, ensaladilla rusa and patatas bravas, to name a few. The restaurant's traditional interior is atmospheric and cosy, and a perfect place to enjoy a hearty selection of delicious tapas washed down with a good glass of local vino tinto (red wine).

    Anna N Says:

For gourmands and gourmets, Palma is a veritable treasure trove. Aside from the fantastic fruit, meat, fish and vegetable markets – such as the one in Santa Catalina district, and the central food halls just off Plaza España – there are many small cobbled streets on which it's easy to stumble across inspiring delis, chocolate shops and bodegas. The old fashioned Bomboneria La Pajarita, established in 1872 and still run by the same family, is situated on Calle San Nicolas and is full of scrumptious goodies including an excellent selection of cold meats, olives, cheeses and local wines. In fact it started life as a chocolatier, a favourite of the Archduke Luis Salvador during his time living in rural Majorca. It may have broadened its range of products since those heady days, but it's still as good as it gets.

For a fantastic selection of foodie experiences, a trip to Soller in the Tramuntana mountains is essential. There, you will find the town's famed Fabrica de Gelats (Ice Cream Factory) as well as Can Det, which has one of the last historic manual oil presses on the island. Can Det sells its own heavenly virgin olive oil and offers a fascinating tour. Lovers of sobrasada, Majorca's unique paprika sausage, can pay a visit to La Luna factory in the town to see the sausage being made, and pop into the town's deli Colmado Sa Lluna for special culinary gifts. The Georg chain of gourmet stores has just opened an excellent outlet in Calle Sa Lluna that offers beautifully packaged Majorcan food gifts including salted almonds, sea salts like Flor de Sal, herbs, balsamic vinegars and condiments.

It's quite a feat for a British chef to have made such an impact in a foreign location, but Marc Fosh is no ordinary individual. With two restaurants under his belt – Misa Braseria and Simply Fosh – as well as a cooking school and contracts with airlines, this Michelin-starred chef has created the kind of Mediterranean dishes and relaxed, casual dining that anyone can enjoy. His lunchtime menus offer exceptional value and service in a warm and unhurried atmosphere.

As far as chains go, it's hard to beat lively Cappuccino San Miguel, which maintains a very high standard of service and cuisine in all its cafés, from Palma to Pollensa. Aside from a wide choice of breakfasts – from traditional Majorcan to eggs and bacon – it offers light and delicious snacks as well as traditional homemade burgers and club sandwiches. They arguably also serve the best cappuccino in town.

Majorca is saturated with excellent restaurants – too many to name here – but one of the most magical is Sebastian's. The 250-year-old building, formerly a stable, is located in a heavenly setting in mountainside Deia village and offers a refreshing take on traditional Mediterranean fare. German-born Sebastian and his Irish wife Patricia form an effective double act, with her running the front of house and entertaining guests, while he slaves away in the kitchen!

When in Majorca, it's important not to judge a restaurant on appearances, but rather on what it serves. One of the most simple hostelries with a big reputation is Es Turo in Fornalutx village. It offers great-value, freshly prepared Majorcan fare in an idyllic mountain setting. This family-owned affair, run by Pep and Xisca, is known for serving one of the best paellas on the island and is famed for its slow oven cooked dishes, such as suckling pig and shoulder of lamb.

Sometimes finding a good vegetarian restaurant is tricky, especially on an island known for its jamon serrano and sobrasada sausage. Bon Lloc, established 30 years ago as the first vegetarian restaurant in Majorca, is a local favourite in Palma, offering inspired veggie creations at exceptional value, and using only freshly prepared local ingredients. Many traditional recipes are on the menu, but with an innovative twist. Soup variations include leek, garlic and pumpkin, and there are a whole raft of salads and flavoursome oven dishes. Owner Juanjo Ramirez certainly knew what he was doing when he opened Bon Lloc – it grows more popular year after year.
