Guide to Ibiza Outdoors

The beautiful little Balearic island of Ibiza is famous for its long hot summers, hedonistic club scene, and fashionable beach clubs. But away from the thrum of DJ beats, Ibiza offers pockets of quiet and plenty for the outdoor explorer to enjoy, from lagoons where the famous Ibiza Salt is produced to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The island's turquoise waters and little coves are perfect for swimming or sailing around to explore the beautiful coast, and many of its walking and cycling routes wind through beautiful countryside.

Sarah F's City Tips

  • Remember that the Spanish dine late. Lunch can be from 2pm or 3pm, and dinner may not start until 10pm or later.
  • Try Spanish food such as paella, tapas (small plates), sobrasada (spicy pork), and ensaiamada pastries filled with cream or pumpkin jam.
  • You may need a phrasebook to get by. English will be spoken in the main resorts, but you may need Spanish off the beaten track.
  • From Ibiza, you can get ferries to two other Balearic islands, Formentera and Mallorca. You can also get a ferry to Denia, on the mainland.
  • Instead of getting a taxi, use the little ferry boats to travel between resorts. The view is fantastic.
  • In high season, you will need to book in advance at the busier restaurants.
  • If eating out every day is too expensive, you can buy cold meats, cheese, olives, and bread to have a beach picnic
  • It is usual to tip in bars and restaurants if you've liked the service. About 10-15% is acceptable.
  • Look out for the lunchtime set menus, called "menu del dia." They are great value and much cheaper than going a la carte.
  • The weather is good all year, so it's cotton casual clothes for summer with a jumper or jacket for the winter evenings.
  • Ibiza is expensive all year round, although it is a bit cheaper from October to Easter.

Situated on the northern part of the island in the beautiful Es Murta nature park, Ibiza Horse Valley is a 70-hectare canyon where formerly abandoned or mistreated horses can live wild and free. The sanctuary offers a variety of treks and horseback adventures that will allow you to find the 'hidden Ibiza' — beautiful north coast beaches, mountains, and amazing views.

A hike up to Dalt Vila (meaning 'High Town') will reward you with far-reaching views. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic hilltop village is an impressive part of Ibiza, home to a castle, a famous cathedral, and buildings dating from the 12th century through to Moorish times and beyond. There's an old drawbridge, ancient cobbled courtyards, and traditional squares, along with souvenir shops, art galleries, and local craft shops. In short, this area is great for a leisurely stroll, the type of old town you want to get deliberately lost in.

A visit to the magical island of Es Vedra is a must so you can enjoy the amazing views over Ibiza and marvel at the clear water. The island is shrouded in myths and legends (it's said that the giant of Es Vedra once lived here, and that this is the home of the sea nymphs and sirens who tried to lure the legendary Greek king Odysseus from his ship), and many people believe they can feel its mystical vibes. You may recognize it from the Hollywood musical South Pacific, or the front cover of Mike Oldfield's Voyager album.

And there are plenty of companies that provide boat trips in all manner of vessels, from luxury yachts to romantic sailing boats, speed boats to jet skis. Many of these tours also allow you to drop anchor and go for a cool swim, or find a fabulous beach restaurant for lunch.

Also known as the Sa Cova de ses Llagostes (or 'the Lobster Cave') Aquarium Cap Blanc was originally a nursery for breeding pot lobsters and housing fishing surpluses. Today, the grotto has been converted into a cool aquarium, where you can see a variety of Mediterranean fish, such as groupers or damsel fish, and then dine on a seafood dinner. The aquarium is situated near a large lake, where you can also see unusual items such as shark eggs and sea sponges.
