Enrique A's City Tips

  • Bring along comfortable shoes to wear while hiking to scenic views or exploring downtown markets.
  • Mazatlan's bus system provides regular buses as well as Green Deluxe Buses, which feature more amenities (including air conditioning) for a few pesos extra.
  • Green and red eco taxis are easy to flag down and have posted set fares. However, open-air pulmonias (which resemble golf carts) charge the same fares and are a quintessential Mazatlan experience.
  • Although Mazatlan weather is great throughout the year, be sure to bring your raincoat if you visit between June and August (rainy season).
  • Always carry some Mexican pesos with you in case restaurants only accept cash.
  • Aurigas, pick up trucks with benches in the back, are good for getting out of town. Be sure to negotiate your price before hopping aboard.
  • SOCIAL Cafe Lounge

    Enrique A Says:

A coffee shop and bar in one, SOCIAL Cafe Lounge is the type of place you can visit at 9am for breakfast and return to at 9pm for dinner or drinks. (And the staff here are so friendly that you may just want to stick around for those hours in between.) Outdoor seating is a great place to people-watch, while the interior has a swankier vibe, with low lighting and white furnishings. In addition to its popular specialty drinks, SOCIAL offers a menu of sandwiches, pizzas, salads and more.

    Enrique A Says:

El Aljibe de S. Pedro provides a truly memorable Mazatlan experience, as much for its incredible setting as for its delicious and eclectic menu. One of the three cisterns that provided Mazatlan with its water during the 1800s, the vaulted space that houses the restaurant is now sprinkled with colorful local artwork, along with antique sewing machines, dolls, musical instruments, and much more. Featuring Mexican dishes 'with a twist' (think smoked marlin gorditas), the menu is just as delightful as the setting.

    Enrique A Says:

Mariscos El Torito is one of the best seafood spots in Mazatlan. The small chain has locations in a few other Mexican cities (including Cabo San Lucas and Baja California Sur), but it originated here in Mazatlan — and the food is still made with as much love as when it was served from a humble street cart. In keeping with its origins, El Torito is still known for its excellent ceviches, but its brick-and-mortar locations now also serve hot dishes, including garlic shrimp and grilled meat.

Looney Bean is a small chain of coffee shops (with a handful of locations in California and Oregon in addition to the two in Mazatlan), but you'll find anything but a chain vibe here. The family-run shops at Olas Altas and Cerritos Beach are both cheery spots that serve up delicious home-baked goodies to go with their high-quality, fair-trade coffees, which are roasted fresh daily and often served with fanciful 'coffee art.'
