Thanks to all above who responded. You're all on the money! There's the odd day where we might be fully booked in summer - we usually have kayaks available for freedom rental, but enquiring in advance for a specific day is best, as we can advise on tidal flows and height for you to get the most out of your paddle. For guided trips, it's definitely best to book in advance - we're a small personal company, we'd need to make sure we have one of us available to head out kayaking on the lagoon with you. Hope that helps.
They have a lot of equipment but tide tables would be helpful if you called first.
It may be worth emailing them to see what they say. They will know how busy they are and what the tide times are for when you will be there. They are really helpful.
We did call a few months in advance to book the day. However, a few days before we did easily change the timing from a full day to a half day because of the tides. They do seem to have quite a few kayaks but we found in general when planning things in NZ it was best to book ahead.
