I believe there is a ferry from Wilmington that you can take to South port which is close to Oak island, but we drove right onto the island.

There are two bridges, but if you are renting you made need to take the one closest to Southport to get your keys. We rent on the West end of the beach , so we then use the Middleton bridge after we have checked in.

You can drive! There are two bridges- one close to Southport and the other close to Holden Beach. In October of 2018 the bridge close to Southport will be closed for several months for repairs, due to reopen by Easter 2019
