I am hoping to bike the trail in late January. However, my schedule is tight. I am coming from Tongariro Alpine Crossing area and heading to Waitomo for the 530 tour. How late do people start cycling? My thought was that I would get up to Ongarue village early afternoon, cycle to the overnight point, start early the next day so I can hopefully make the 530 tour at Waitomo Worm Caves. Is this crazy? I am reasonably fit. But I don't want to rush to experience. Thanks.
Hi - yes it depends on your fitness level to make it. People have ridden the trail in one day but it is recommended to do it over two days. My recommendation would be to park your car at Bennetts Road Car Park and have one of our shuttle operators take you to the start of the trail in Pureora and you cycle from North to South. Stay at the Timber Trail lodge one night and start early morning and finish in Ongarue by 2pm at the latest. You can then drive to Waitomo for the 5.30pm tour.
