No you are not allowed to drive to the movie set directly. You drive to "bus depot" where you can park your car. Then you are forced to buy the overpriced tickets so you can get on a bus, which will take you to the movie set. You get a tour guide who will take you through the movie set and tell you stories. I guess we had a boring guide who was able to say "cool" / "that's so cool" at least 38 times during the tour. We did loose count I think, which was not cool. She was clearly lost for words, but hey that's cool. I guess if you have a good and funny guide it is more enjoyable, but after the 5th door (remember it is a movie set, so there is nothing behind it) we were getting bored, which was not cool. At the end of the tour you get to the Green Dragon for a free cool drink. The walk in the park looking at doors in Shire cost for a family of 4, $240, not cool. Peter Jackson is laughing all the way to bank. Hope he makes a new movie with the proceedings of this Hobbit park. Personally I don't understand why so many people give it 4-5 stars. We thought it was not cool, but I guess we are too cool for our boots and a walk in the Shire. Btw the video they show in bus as you drive to the set, was cool and interesting. On the way back you get to see part 2 of the video and Peter Jackson thanking you for your visit to the Shire. Now how cool is that.

Yes you can easily drove there and there’s plenty of parking.

Definitely pre-book tickets online though. We were there last week and overheard someone very upset that they’d driven a long way and all sold out when they got there.

We drove in our hire van from Waihau Bay to the Shires Rest Cafe where you can park your vehicle (heaps of room).

Suggest you book your tickets online to avoid lengthy waits because it’s a popular attraction.

Make sure you are on time - you must complete your check in process.

I loved it - if you love LOTR then this is a must do.

Yes you can drive to Hobbiton and park your car in the large car park . The actual tour is done on one of their buses with a guide. At this time of the year it is best to pre-book though.

Yes you can drive to the centre , they then take you by bus to the movie set, as part of a tour. You can buy tickets at the visitor centre or on line.
