Arriving by tendered cruise ship Nov 3/19. Do you know how far a walk it is from the wharf to the Giant's House? Will the gardens be in bloom this time of year? Is there still a free shuttle service. And how long is the average tour within the Giant's House property? Thanks
It can be walked, we are in our sixties and made it, we took a couple of short rests but it can be done, once into town and that is easy from the jetty, it is up hill to the giants house, the last bit quite steep, have water and good walking shoes, it is quite a scenic walk.
We were dropped off and later picked up at the front because it was included on our excursion. It would be a long walk up the hill to it from the harbor, plus the walk around the bay from where the tenders land. Our house tour by the owner/sculptor, Ms. Martin, was part of the excursion too, so I don't know the separate cost details. The garden tour, which is the best part, was not guided; you do it on your own. In all, we loved seeing all of it and were glad it was part of our excursion. It's pretty amazing what she has created there.
I.4 km sounds about right. Very pleasant walk but a little up hill at the end. Garden should be fine in the spring but its the sculptures and mosaics that have the wow factor. Allow at least 90 mins with house tour. Allow time for photos and visit to cafe. We were on a private tour and had a tour of the house tour pre-booked by the artist herself. Akaroa is beautiful. Enjoy.
I do not know if the flowers will be blooming in November. I do know that it is a bit of a hike up hill to get to the Giant's House but well worth your time and efforts.
We found the walk fairly easy. The gardens are beautiful, but it's all about the art. One lady created all of it. She lives in the house, and this is her garden. If you go on a tour with the ship, I believe they take you into her house as well. We got to talk to her in the doorway, but could not go in as we went on our own.
Also think it closes about 4 pm.
You should allow at least 45 mins to view properly.
It is a fair hike by foot. Not sure if there are shuttles or taxi's to be honest. Maybe ask on board.
Will be a lovely time of year to view. it is more about the mosaics than gardens really. It is fabulous.
The gardens will be lovely as it will be spring in NZ
You may be able to get a shuttle... ask on board cruise ship as Akaroa puts on extra stuff when ships cruise in.
From town it's a little bit of a walk ..... the hardest bit is the steep hill to the Giants house.
There was no tour... you just wander around the outside garden and sculptures/art/mosaic work as the main house was closed to public, as it is also a Bed & Breakfast.
There is an entrance fee.
Hope you have a fabulous trip.
The Giant's House is a unique place that you shouldn't miss. It's really about the mosaic sculptures but November is the last month of Spring in this part of the world so there will be flowers as well. Don't miss it!
HI, Google says 20 minutes. it's 1.4 km and a 4 min drive.
The locals are so friendly you can probably hitch!
It's well worth the climb. Garden will look great at that time.
I know you are on a cruise ship but be sure to stay at Tree crop farm (accommodation) one night the coolest little luxury hut to stay at. well worth the $250 for couples.
Enjoy Akaroa it's beautiful
The distance to the Giants house isn’t too far, if you don’t have a problem walking. You could check the actual distance with Google.
The street does have an incline & also entrance to the house. This is not suitable if you have a problem walking.
We were dropped off there at the end of a tour. The walk back to the ship was easy because it was downhill.
We only toured the gardens, you walk around yourselves.
I’d imagine the gardens will be pretty in November because it will be Spring. However it’s not just about the flowers, more about the sculptures.
Take advantage of enjoying refreshments in the tea area, it was amazing. We were there quite a long time, we had a beautiful day & sat & enjoyed the many lovely seating areas.
You can walk the distance, if I can most people can, it does get steep, specially the last small walk to the gate. It is however well worth it, I do believe there is a bus but you would need to check with tour on the ship for this service. I can recommend after the visit walk back down to the town and to the fish and chip shop it is really good. There is quite good shopping and browsing in the town.
The Giants House is about a 20 minute walk from the quay side. The last bit is steep. I don't know about a free shuttle service. I should think early November being early summer would be a good time for flowers. I understand the property tours are to be booked in advance but the gardens in November on a nice day allow a good hour it was raining the day we visited so we did not linger.
The giants house have a good website.
