If you have been to both Wai-O-Tapu Thermal wonderland and Craters of the Moon thermal park at Lake Taupo, what is the main difference please and would you still do both?
Just arrived back from 10 glorious days in Taupo.
Support the answers above both about Rotorua and Taupo as visited both.
Also suggest you take your bathers as public swimming is cheap, clean and lovely warm water.
Think Taupo will be cold in June so make sure u rug up.
I liked Taupo so much that I’m returning in July!
Hi there - we only went to Craters of the Moon. Friends had said how smelly Rotorua was so we gave it a miss. Taupo is an excellent base for Craters of the moon and don't miss Huka Falls - there is a lovey walk alongside the river with good views of the falls - and also a café at the end of the walk to make it worth while!
Have a great time!
We only visited Craters of the Moon. Sorry I can’t help
Thanks very much. We will be there in July but am planning on visiting a few. Thanks for the heads up with Rotorua. We intend to stay in Taupo as a base.
Craters of the Moon is mostly boiling mud holes I was there in Feb and it had been very dry. Consequently, many of the mud holes didn't have gloopy mud and where not at their best. But it's nowhere near as interesting as Wai o Tapu
Wai O Tapu is a splendid, picturesque geothermal area. Lakes, multi coloured, well laid out with good walkways. If you look online you will see photos of the lakes. Spectacular.
If you can only make one of these areas go for Wai O Tapu.
Incidentally I wasn't that impressed with Rotorua. Smelly and not a lot to see and do.
