Te Puia is government owned whereas Whakarewarewa is owned by the Maori people through a Charitable Trust. At Whakarewarewa people who live in the village work in the business, with all profits being reinvested. Their are guided tours on the hour and cultural performances at 11.15 am and 2.00pm, with the opportunity to walk the back tracks, relax in the Cafe or spend time in the various souuvenir shops. You stiil get to see the geysers whether you visit Whakarewarewa or Te Puia, while also seeing mudpools, bubbling springs and meeting the people.
