Can you hire bicycles and are there any traffic free cycle routes
I agree: we were also interested in cycling in the beginning, but quickly gave up since the area is too hilly and you cannot get to most interesting places on the bike. Instead we found out that the Lago area is a paradise for hikers! If you have a GPS, you can download exciting hiking routes from the illagomaggiore website. There are piligrims' paths to ancient monasteries, breathtaking scenery and authentic villages where the time seems to have stopped centuries ago. Highly recommended!
To be honest I don't know if there are any hire shops for bikes. If there are, they are not prominent. The area is relatively bike friendly but apart from serious cyclist teams you really don't see anyone on a bike. It's at the foot of the Alps on a lake side. More appropriate to cycling through than enjoying any real time on a bike. You would bore after a short time if your holiday was in recreational cycling about the place. It isn't big enough.
