Wife does not want to go if this is the case noted in the review below.
They have meticulously fenced in every stone during tourist season. They have put up some kind of visitor's center where you can pay to get a guided walk in English like once a week.
It is true you have to pay to walk among the stone. You can see them from the parking lot also (for free). There are guided walking tours about every 20 minutes, I would think they are in English on request. When I was there it was with an Australian group, the guide walking us trough spoke English. There are also two different tourist trains/busses doing a loop of the greater area. I would be very surprised if the taped commentary were not in English.
Yes, the alignmnments are protected by a fence all year long. There are also some tours in English. The best way for me to enjoy the exhaustive view is by what they call, "le petit train". You will havethe complete tour of the main fields of menhirs and enjoy a perfect audioguiding in English.
from time to time you are allowed to walk through the menhirs but not always. In that case it should be free of charge! Enjoy the site!
the tourist train has many languages including English PLUS a kids friendly version in English or French. our three year old loved it
As all the previous answers they are fenced off, but the le petit train, is great a worth the money, there is a English version on this train which is very good, our grandchild loved the children s version as well. Worth doing. A lovely trip area the area.
the main alignements are fenced off in tourist season. there are plenty of lesser sites within a few km, dolmens, circles, mentors and tumuli. I spent two weeks there with family and did not go through the fence. did not feel like I missed out getting up close to prehistory.
We were there in May. The stones do have a fence around them so you cannot walk amongst them just around the perimeter. it's ok though. We went into the visitor centre and I didn't notice if there was a charge for anything. There's other sites in the area. Some free some not. It is a lovely area of France regardless of these stones.
