We drove with pour friends from Guarda (Portugal) who is only about 1h30 drive, this in order to visit “La Alberca” as it has a great history. To park your car, there is a parking just before the town on the right it’s free the next one is to pay. Only 300 meters walk. When driving a bit further up-town you also have s free car-+ark on your right, We have to admit that the town has splendid old architecture and is like you step back few hundred years in time. On plaza mayor there is the tourist office where they give you a map of the town and surroundings. Great tip as we found lovely places as well after our visit.

Greatly appreciated help given by a lady from the Park Office with suggestions about how best to spend the day, and in providing useful maps. Her English was perfect too as sadly our Spanish is limited. Could have spent much longer than one day here....
Without this help our day would not have been so perfect.

We parked in the car park and walked along the well marked trail along the valley, stopping at first 2 caves. Sadly we didn’t find the third...suspect some path re-routing may be ongoing.
Saw a wild boar and a black snake.
Peace, surroundings and good weather helped us truly appreciate the natural world at its best here.

    Villages were interesting....time capsules.

This is a truly great area which I hope remains natural for others in the future to enjoy.

The plaza Mayor in La Alberca is a small main square when you compare it with other plazas em Spain. Here you will find also the town hall, which was once an old prison, and the Fountain and the granite transept that date back to the 18th century. Surrounding the square inside are several houses of traditional La Alberca construction that house restaurants. and bars where you can taste some of the most representative dishes of the province of Salamanca!! It truly is a town with a lot to see and getting lost in its alleys is something you should not miss when you visit. In the middle of the square is also situated the 18th century cross with symbols of the Passion. We and our friends from Brazil loved it and it is definitely worth visiting.

This church has been built in the year 1730 and this by the architect Manuel de Lara Churriguera. On the outside this chucrhc does not seems different from the many churches in the whole of Spain. The main altar and the Central chapel, iwho are made into the century Gothic style from the 16th century, this with columns typical of this style that support the vault. It is the only element that remained from the old chapel. The side altars with the images of the Virgin of the Rosary, The Altar of Santa Ana, and the Virgin Carmen, Santo Cristo das Batalhas, S. Pedro, and Cristo Redentor, are very beautiful. We have to admit that the interior of the church was a very pleasant surprise. And the entry is free.

The Satur-Juanela House Museum is one of the last traditionally structured houses who are left over in La Alberca. This typical house has been converted into a museum to show a way of life and a type of architecture characteristic of the area and which disappeared at the end of the 20th century. Into the house they preserved all the original furniture and belongings of the house, allowing us to know how people lived in the Sierra de Francia until very few decades ago. Sátur and Josefa, "the Juanelas", lived here with their four children and some of their grandchildren. Unfortunately the museum was closed on the moment of our visit.

The tourist office you can´t miss, when you arrive on the “Plaza Mayor” it is located on your righthand side. The staff of the office is super friendly, and if you are in need of a map or any other information, this is the place to be.

To see the “El Marrano de San Anton”, you will have to walk until the “church of of Our Lady of the Assumption”, the statue is located on the back-side of the church. You have to know that the sculpture of the San Antón pig is a monument of homage. According to an Albercan tradition, a pig is raised during June 13 (San Antonio de Padua) and January 17 (San Antón) by all the residents of the town this because it is wandering through its streets, on the last day the pig it is auctioned. A nice place in La Alberca to take some pictures.
