What travellers are saying
- JaxOpotiki, New Zealand581 contributionsWe really enjoyed the trout centre and thought it was great value for money. Was awesome learning about trout, trout fishing and waterways. Well laid out and the walk along the Tongariro River was nice on a sunny day. Always enjoy feeding pools of trout. It would be a fantastic place to bring eager to learn kids!Written 9 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - 26CathMelbourne, Australia153 contributionsAs a young Kiwi in 1988 I did the ascent with a couple of other military mates. We drove down from Auckland and hiked up to the first hut on the Mangatepopo trail. The following morning we hit the trail early and scrambled up to the summit. Amazing views across Tongariro and Ruapehu and down into the crater. Well worth the effort…and this was before it was Mt DoomWritten 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AmeznzOxford9 contributionsKids enjoyed themselves but swam for only 45 mins in the public pool.
Facilities were OK, but dated. Staff were average and were bitching about a staff member named Heather (who sounds awful) when I came in.
Good stop off, the thermal walk is interesting too.
Pretty good value but definitely not a whole day activity.Written 26 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Cliff JLondon, UK2,128 contributionsWent in for one piece of information in particular. Staff were friendly as usual and very helpful, answering all my questions and supplying relevant information in a clear and precise way.Written 3 April 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Beth H8 contributionsThis is a well maintained track and an easy walk for New Zealand. The beaches were stunning and we appreciated the numerous tree/plant identification signs. We were there in fall and it was just beautiful with all the bird song. The restroom at the halfway point was much appreciated by our party.Written 1 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JoySydney, Australia5 contributionsThe gallery is an excellent showcase of the range of art produced in the Turangi area and is very well presented. So impressed.Written 25 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- DairneBeijing13 contributionsWe drove down tree trunk gorge road to get to start of cycling track, but could only cycle 100 its before massive tree falls (from Cyclone Gabrielle) blocked the track - this section is essentially closed to bikes although walkers could still get over/around this. Drove back out to Pillars of Hercules track and started biking there - again lots of trees/green waste over the track, so lots of lifting bikes and getting on/off. Got to Pillars of Hercules, tried to cycle through to Urchin camp but again, too many wind blown logs to proceed by bike.
Definitely needs a chainsaw crew to get in there and clear things!Written 12 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A great experience in the Tongariro area especially when wanting to break up the outdoor stuff with a fun, inside activity. Great when raining. The couple that own it, Synove and Josh were amazing! - MatakanagirlMatakana29 contributionsWe used Backyard tours to go to the Summer Concert in Taupo from Kuratau, they were amazing, there were 12 of us and they stopped on the way there and back so people could go to the toilet and shop. Communication was excellent and super friendly would definitely recommend them.Written 27 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - djpeekTauranga, New Zealand15 contributionsAmazing back country walk. My mate and I walked starting from Urchin track to waipakihi river, walked up the river (make sure you check flow rates as this varies the times), camped out in tent, then continued the next day to the hut and then out along the umukarikari track back to carpark. Should have booked a shuttle, bumped into someone who drove us back to carpark. We were going to walk but glad we didn't as it was long and boring along the road, or we thought about walking through the woods following powerlines, but the hunter we got the ride from said it was near impossible.
Reception (Not that I recommend having/using your phone as having no phone does something good for the soul):
- Reception along Urchin track (we only did half before dipping down into river trail)
- No reception along waipakihi river trail (didn't actually arrive at the hut but were about 200yards away, no reception, but slight chance there may have been at hut but unlikely judging by the elevation)
- Reception up on umukarikari track all the way to car park
- DOC times were quite accurate on the lower ends of the time ranges (we took our time as well)
- Popular hunting spot during the roar between March and April
- Filling up water bottles in these rivers safe for the most part, but have some basic river/water knowledge before doing this.
- Always check the weather beforehand

We were so lucky and got to see both wild groups of horses. John was fun and providing interesting information. But we had no time to talk a lot, it was riding a lot. As very experienced riders owing our own horses we appreciated this private tour a lot.Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
