What travellers are saying
- Maura HShelton, Nebraska, USA171 contributionsGreat tour of a timeless glimpse into the past. The staff on the tour were very informative. Have devices and earphones ready to listen on your own phone for the tour.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lovetotravel8 contributionsIt starts out super easy, and then you get to walk across big, flat rock, then a tunnel, and then some pretty trick terrain. I loved it; my husband - not so thrilled. The first time, we walked the whole trail on a cold, overcast day. The second time was a beautiful, sunny day. The waves were crashing, the surfers were surfing. It was awesome.Written 3 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11,776 contributionsThe Elms is a wonderful house but I think the grounds are the crowning glory here. The 14-acre property with its gardens, its folly and all of the fountains and statues is fantastic.
It's hard to believe that this property almost became a shopping center but it seems that only an economic downturn that forced the developer to sell the property to the Preservation Society kept it standing. We would have lost so much!
At 31,401 square feet, it is the 19th largest historic house in the United States and the 3rd largest of Newport's "cottages" behind The Breakers and Ochre Court (now the main administration building for Salve Regina University).Written 21 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The decor was certainly over the top bit it went with the house.
Tours are available through the Preservation Society of Newport County. One of the nice things about this place is the beautiful furniture. Virtually all of the original furniture was donated to the Preservation Society by the Prince family (the final private owners).
The Chinese tea house is also worth a visit. It is located at the rear of the property (beside the ocean) and serves tea and snacks. We were a bit disappointed that the snacks were just prepackages sandwiches, muffins, etc. However, we read that they serve better things at other times.Written 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Reservations and a ticket to tour the Marble House are mandatory. It was a memorable experience but an expensive afternoon with the addition of the ticket and the quick tour we needed to take to hold my granddaughter’s interest.Written 5 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11,776 contributionsRough Point is the fifth mansion that we toured in Newport and the final one. As one might expect, it is a beautiful house but it also has a very nice property with lovely gardens - even in the second part of October!
Unlike the 4 others that were run by the Preservation Society of Newport, Rough Point is run by the Newport Restoration Foundation (founded by Doris Duke). Thus, it has a separate fee but it was worth every penny.
Rough Point also is the most beautiful of all the Newport Mansions, as seen from the Cliff Walk. With the little gorge and the flowers, it is just perfect!
Rough Point is actually called Rough Point Museum, even though it is not all that different to tour that the other mansions in Newport. I think that itis called a museum because it does celebrate the life of Doris Duke, the tobacco Heiress who owned the property.Written 2 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - KathrynSRB26 contributionsFabulous! Take the guided tour. This tours takes you into the fort and shares the history behind the construction. Tour moves along quickly and is about an hour. Worth it! We had an excellent guide.Written 1 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- RandyRossRidgetown, Canada11,776 contributionsWe definitely wanted to tour the Touro Synagogue in Newport during our visit to the city. It is such an historic place! To visit one must go to the Loeb Visitors Center, just around the corner from the synagogue to book a tour and purchase tickets. All tours are guided. Despite the fact that we have Jewish friends and relatives, this is the first time that I have been in a synagogue and my first time to wear a Kippah (Yarmulke).
We booked an early tour - 10 a.m. and it was a great choice. Our tour had only about 10 people, whereas the next tour looked more like 20+.Written 18 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. This is the place to go for shopping and eating as well as viewing historical buildings and some fun museums like the yachting museum.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NorthStar096588373801 contributionPlan on 1.5hrs unless you want to read a majority of the player history exhibits. The exhibits and grounds are historically interesting and if you’re a tennis player or fan you should find it a great place to visit.Written 21 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
