The tower was originally part of the city's defensive system and now just stands there overlooking the economic activities surrounding it. Walking through it you enter a mostly pedestrian street with small stores and even smaller eateries. Helmstedt is clearly not a rich town and still carries the burden of having been part of East Germany. Times were different prior to that era and some of it still shows. The town was first mentioned in 952

Built in 1592 in an Italian Renaissance style the Juleum building was the great auditorium building of the university. sadly we were only in Helmstedt for the night and it was too late to go inside the building but a view of the magnificent facade was reward enough. We'll worth a visit just down from the Main Street in the town

The museum is situated in Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, not far from the A2 Autobahn and the Marienborn Memorial (Checkpoint Alpha) located at the Autobahn. The town of Helmstedt is close to the Sachsen-Anhalt border, which formerly marked the most important border passing between the two German countries.

The correct name of the museum is Zonengrenzmuseum, reflecting the fact that the border was between the zones of the Western Allied Countries and the Soviet, established after WWII.

We visited the former Checkpoint Alpha at the Autobahn a couple of years ago, but at that time the museum in Helmstedt was not open, so we decided to try once more. It is a rather traditional museum operated by the state of Lower Saxony and a good addition to the Checkpoint. Several exhibits from 1945 to 1989 are on show, including original banknotes. It should be noted that most texts are in German only, making it less accessible to a number of visitors.

Opening hours may vary so check before going to avoid disappointments. Admission to the museum is free.

The photo shows the museum located at the A2, Exit 63, whereas Südertor 6 is the location of the Zonengrenz-Museum in the town of Helmstedt. There is about 5 kms between the two museums.
On the day of our visit, the museum in Helmstedt was not open, but we visited the large site at A, also known as Checkpoint Alpha as it is the westernmost checkpoint for travel to and from Western Berlin, and it was like going about 35 years back in time.
The exhibitions show various structures and offices, used for the border crossing between Western Germany and the DDR and vice versa in the period from 1945 to 1989.
I especially recommend young people to visit this excellent museum.

The market place has suffered some neglect of its buildings, probably in the years of the DDR but many of the timber buildings have been restored and the square is huge, reflecting how wealthy the town was 400 years ago. It was great to see that there was a market operating and brisk sales of the local delicacy asparagus.

This place can be found not too far from Helmstedt, next to the Gerdening society Pastorenweg and is accessible from B1. You will see a sign at the left side of the road when driving from Helmstedt in direction Konigslutter. There is a small parking lot, illogically behind a sign prohibiting entry of motor vehicles.

Just a few steps further you will find two stone graves from Stone Age. Place is very well kept and makes a magical impression. It is incredibly photogenic. I am sure this was not my last visit.

This real hidden gem is located about 15 minutes of driving from Helmstedt in the village Buddenstedt. It is flooded former opencast mine with beautiful nature and incredible number of various kinds of birds. There are three lakes - Anna Sued, Anna Nord and Caroline next to each other. Trails around the lakes are not marked but it is not possible to get lost. You will find several benches to relax and watch the breathtaking nature.
It is possible to drive directly to the lakes, there several parking lots but the roads leading there are not in a good condition.
I personaly parked my car at the little parking next to Plastic Omnium company parking and walked on the dirt road leading to the waste water treatment station (follow the arrow pointing to Klaranlage). After about 700 m of enjoyble walking in the fields I arrived to Anna Sued.

Until end of 19th century there was a spa in Bad Helmstedt using springs rich on sulphur and carbon dioxide for drinking and bathing. This is why the town can still use word Bad in its name. Mean time old spa buildings disappeared but park and peacefull relaxing atmosphere remained. The park itself is not big but well maintained with plenty of flowers, benches and exhibition of modern statues. Walking there is a pleasant experience and can be connected with a walk around Clarabad, lake used for the bath treatment in the past and its neighborhood with opportunity to learn about town and spa history from several information panels in German and English.
There are several parking possibilities in Bad Helmstedt with enough capacity. Just follow signs.
