What travellers are saying
- K2356RFSuePreston, UK86 contributionsA lovely old town area with a stunning cathedral. All within easy walking distance of shopping, trains and a bus station. Ideally situated to explore other areas very easily and cheaply.Written 9 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Colliefan2127 contributionsVisited the church while on holiday in Faro - 2 euro entrance fee.
A well maintained beautiful church.
The Chapel of skulls was eerie but after I looked up the history, and it's very interesting.
Definitely a must see if in the area!Written 17 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Farol is a nicer walk amongst the holiday homes and cafes than Culatra. Landmark the light house in Farol where I started walking. Beautiful white sand. . BYOS(bring your own stuff) food, water, sandals, sun screen. There are a few small store but limited products Many cute cottages in Farol. I decided to walk on the beach I landed to Culatra about 25 mins walk. Big mistake. There is a barrier. You have to walk from the light house beach(back) to get to Culatra. They are connected and a better walk. From Farol beach you can see Faro and Olhao town. You can see flights going in and out of Faro airport. Beautiful beach walk. Think
Waikiki beach in Hawaii minus the crowd.
Culatra is mostly residential homes. Few cafes. Go to Farol-it’s better. Both places does not have any public place to sit or shelter frm the sun. You have to order something in order to be able to sit at any cafe or restaurant on this island. Fare round trip is €5. I took the jetty back from Culatra to Olhao Marina. Beach was well worth it.
Clean , sandy had a good couple of hours in winter sun!
Plenty of bars/restaurants along front
Ferry taxi only €2 euros back to Faro

But having said that, to see in those not-too-many displays is quite an impressive "historical timeline" especially among those seen on the first level (the level for archaeology) dating back to about the Roman time including the "notable displays" in my opinion of some busts of Roman emperors, a full-sized human skeleton under a glass floor & an "elaborate-designed mosaic" which covers some sizeable area of the floor in one room; and not as much far back in time as on the first level but still going back to about the time of Renaissance I would say are the displays on the second level (the level for art) many of which are these sizeable & colorful paintings of "religion-themed" scenes, and actually there was also at the time (not sure if it was a temporary exhibit) a room full of works portraying some "nature & social" scenes by some artist from just about a hundred years ago (and who was likely a local artist from this area). And yes, apart from the display rooms of this museum is also its fair-sized "inner courtyard" with some hedge rows arranged in squares & rectangles (for some nice photo-ops I would say from the "corridors around" on both levels and where also to see along those corridors are a number of "earth pots" & "stone plates" with inscriptions likely of the royal coat-of-arms).
Located at the "old town" area of the city, also just in the vicinity of this place are: the Faro Cathedral with like an L-shaped square around it (more impressed by the beautiful heritage buildings around the square than the cathedral itself which in any case was "closed for entry" likely due to being weekend); the "town wall" with really no visible sign of decay & damage I would say despite its centuries-old age; and two outdoor "drawings-on-tiles" depicting some scenes from the medieval time around the 1200's (both of which actually right beside the "town wall" and not far from one another although I kind of wonder if those two drawings have always existed on those same spots through all those centuries!). And yes, also not too far from this museum (but located outside the "old town") is the "beautiful area" around the city's marina with: some "impressive number" of boats in the marina; a fish-headed mermaid statue & a 'love (heart) Faro' sign right beside the marina; a small vertical monument at the road intersection near the marina; and also some streets lined with various shops & restaurants (for my breakfast before entering the "old town" and for some nice "Faro souvenirs" before heading back to my place on the oceanfront at the end of the day).Written 21 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I ended up buying a case of my favourite for later as I was driving. So nice to have a change from the usual Super Bok.Written 31 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Good to know before you go: it's 3 Euro each to enter and the gardens are accessed by stairs. We saw the palatial parlours and most of the garden, but 3 Euro entrance is steep for what you get.Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
