Old Government House is well worth visiting even if it means a detour from Sydney. It is easy to get to Parramatta either by train or on the ferry. Old Government House is set in the middle of Parramatta Park which is quite scenic. A tour through the house is fascinating and run by volunteers who do an amazing job!

    Well done!

Visited Parramatta Park for the first time and came away very impressed. First off could not believe how big it was but also the range of facilities available. We went with a group of special needs kids and found a great spot where the kids/young adults could enjoy themselves plus also a history of old Sydney to explore? The park has the original Government House built in 1799 by convicts in the Georgian style. A Boer War memorial built in 1904 and the remains of an early observatory which dates back to 1868. Lots of open parkland, BBQ, covered pavilions and lots of shades areas to picnic & relax! We will definitely be back.

I absolutely love this place, and visit several times when I’m home in nearby Carlingford during the summer.

The main draw card for me is the swimming. The little “beach” area is so picturesque and a delightful place to spend a couple hours on a sunny day. The water is beautiful and refreshing, and sand has recently been added to the area where you enter the water, making entry and exit easier. There’s a shallow area as you enter that is perfect for kids, but more confident swimmers can swim out further to deeper water within the cordoned area. It’s also possible to swim past the cordoned area into more open water and you aren’t stopped from doing so by the lifeguards. This is especially handy for people with stand up paddle boards, etc.

There are some nice rocky areas and a few picnic tables nearby as well.

A little further up from the water, they have a little park for kids and a grassed area with more picnic tables and barbecues.

You can hire pedalos/kayaks, but it’s quite pricey and can be a long wait. Good fun if you have the time and funds, though.

Parking can be a bit difficult, so would recommend getting there early, especially on a hot day. If you don’t mind a bit of a walk, there’s also street parking at the entrance to the reserve, maybe a 10 minute walk.

There’s a cafe on site that I wouldn’t bother with. Ordered caramel milkshakes and 2 types of cake and they were awful. Milkshakes were tasteless (apart from vague sour milk taste) and the cakes were dry and not very tasty.

Love Rosehill Gardens. Went to see my horse race for the first time. Parking at the front entrance, owners tickets right at the entrance. Viewing was easy. Had a great day.

Saturday was the defence force recruiting day held at Lancer Barracks. It was and amazing day, the sun was shining and it was a perfect day to be out and about in Parramatta. Our son is an army cadet and is seriously considering a career in the defence force. Our son was able to speak to so many members of the army and learned so much. Us as parents were given so much information. Very well organised.

Did some Christmas shopping before the big day. This is quite a large Westfield with just about every type of shop a person could need. It is quite spacious with more than one food court. There are some decent places to catch a bite to eat and a cinema to watch a movie. The carpark is quite substantial, however, can be quite expensive if there for a long period of time.

Visiting the Whitlam Institute should be a compulsory exercise for all Australians. The care that is obvious from the staff is matched by the strength of the exhibits, illuminating, inspiring, provoking. We visited at a time when one of the "Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood" events was running and this was a magnificent idea and something again which needs a bigger audience. We spent three hours visiting and had to drag ourselves away. Well done everyone.

Such a good set up of theatres of different sizes and formats for performances of many sizes. Good ticketing and bar areas. Lots of booster cushions for kids. Need more restaurants close to the entry.

Soon to be demolished (but hopefully re-opening elsewhere in Sydney), the speedway makes for a great night. There's always a long program of races for $30 but the special nights with demolition derbies are particularly good. There's a hill around much of the track that's good to sit on and the alcohol is cheap (although it runs out). Easy walk from Clyde station, parking is limited.

Fantastic museum...full of medical and nursing history. The volunteers were knowledgeable, friendly and so passionate about the museum and it's history.
