We had a wonderful day walking through the Reserve. We were able to observe a Sloth hanging in the trees as well as several snakes! We hired a private guide which helped greatly tracking the wild life.

The birds are most active in the early morning and Curi-Cancha opens at 7 am for this reason. This reserve is especially good for bird spotting, with plants and trees that birds favour. There are areas with bushes favoured by hummingbirds and other areas with fruiting trees for a range of other birds. We spent about four to five hours bird spotting, starting at 6 am in a public area and moving to this reserve when it opened. The earlier you start the better, by mid morning the birds are much less active.

There appear to be many competing entries for this reserve, which is confusing. You can just pay to enter and walk around, or you can book a tour. We used a private guide and the entry ticket was included in the price of the tour.

This was a very educational and interesting tour with lots of samples. We also saw lots of their farm animals. Our tour guide Fernando was very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about his work. We would highly recommend this tour. The property is beautiful and they loaned us umbrellas as it was raining which was appreciated.

This is the newest preserve in the Monteverde area and is less crowded than the other two. It has several interesting hiking trails. They are all well marked and easy to follow. The forest is beautiful. At some points you can see the Arenal volcano in the distance. The cafe at the park is ok but not great. The road from Santa Elena to the park is very rough.

My wife and I rely on reviews, but admittedly, we rarely leave them. However, I feel compelled to leave a review for this wonderful experience. My family enjoyed the Bat Jungle tremendously and I highly recommend it to anyone whether you are “into” bats or not. The tour guide was so enthusiastic about bats and had a wealth of information…my whole family (kids 16, 14, and 10) found the experience fascinating and it ended up being one of the coolest (and surprising) experiences we had in Costa Rica. If you’re looking for something to do in Santa Elena you should do this. Super cool.

Our Tour Guide -Alberto- juan27-7-85@hotmail.com -Costa Rica Children's Eternal Rainforest. My granddaughter had learned of this area in class and the fantastic story of the students of Switzerland raising money to protect this rainforest from development. This was a long rough road up the mountain. So beautiful at the top. Many colorful birds, leaf cutting ants, and baby frogs! The full hike to the waterfall was too much for Nana, others loved the wonderful waterfall site.

We did the Bridges Walk with Joshua and we had a fantastic time. Joshua was very friendly and he knew a lot about all the animals we saw during the walk. It was very nice to walk on the hanged bridges or in the Cloud forest and be able to spot some sloughs as well as a variety of monkeys. birds or other animals. We had some food at the café/restaurant before the walk and it was nice to eat while looking at people doing the zipliner.

There's a wonderful collection of frogs here (& much more, including mounted displays of insects, butterflies and scorpions, amongst much else) - but lots of them are really small and hard to see. I went in the daytime which isn't the optimum, I know - the best time to observe them is early evening when they're more active. And take advantage of any guide that's there, who'll help you spot the frogs. I met a really helpful assistant/volunteer there, Anna, and if it hadn't been for my half an hour with her and another guest I wouldn't have seen half the frogs I did, other than the very visible and striking poison frogs. Choose your visit time carefully, and you'll have a fascinating time (& enhance all those nature walks you're probably also doing in the country).

We stayed at the hotel and did the night tour they offer for the reserve. The guide they hire works at Selvatura during the day I believe; what a hard worker! Unfortunately I forgot his name but he was adept at pointing out/hearing wildlife rustling around. He found many tarantulas that I refused to look at. He also had a lot to say about the ficus trees and how they worked, as well as other fauna. The reserve was surprisingly big and even has a waterfall (that we didn’t really see as it was night). I wish we saw more than just 500 tarantulas but that wasn’t the guide’s fault, wildlife can be fickle. If you want a real cloud forest be sure to go to Monteverde or Santa Elena though as the Valley Escondido reserve is a transition forest.

Overall a good evening nightlife tour. Luckily it did not rain (that would have been miserable!). Booked the tour on line and the company came and picked us up from our hotel and dropped us back afterwards (we were in a centrally located Santa Elena hotel). We went on the earlier evening tour - there were two time slots. There were a lot of people and they divided us into small groups - 8 in ours. They give you torches, but they are not the brightest, so if you happen to have your own bright torch, it's worth taking it. Our guide had eagle eyes and pointed out loads of animals and reptiles. He was very knowledgeable and passionate and clearly enjoyed taking people round. He had a spotting scope and helped take closer photos through the lens for people. He made sure everyone got to see things. He spoke great English. From a sleeping Toucan in the tree, sloths, an armadillo (amazing), spiders (several types), keel billed toucans, many bugs, ants and several snakes. There seemed to be snakes everywhere lurking in the trees or hanging above the frog ponds! The only negative is whilst we were a nice group with a lovely guide, there were quite a lot of other people on the property, so it was quite busy at times passing on trails, with lots of flashing torches. Overall I enjoyed it, but think I'd prefer a small quieter tour with less people around.
