- FelixKassel, Germany2 contributionsI did my first (group) surf lesson yesterday. Our guides quickly showed us the basics and after a short time we went in the water and tried it the first time. After just a few tries i reached to atand up.

- Ezra M29 contributionsI visited Green Wave in Raglan for a surfing lesson as part of a group of 13.
There was a variety of surfing experience in the groups, but for me, the closest I’d been to a surfboard in my life was carrying the board down to the beach for the lesson. I just turned 60 earlier in the year and don’t feel particularly athletic or co-ordinated!
The instructors, Liv, Ryan and Zen (Zennor) were all very nice people, and clearly very knowledgable and very good at imparting or sharing their knowledge. This applied to the lesson on the beach before we got in the water and during our time in the water. There was a very good ratio of instructors to group members and I think we were all very pleased with the attention and assistance that we received from Liv, Ryan and Zen while in the water.
For my part I challenged them to get me to stay up on or even stand on the board before the end of the lesson. They accepted and even offered my money back if I failed. There was no fear of the failure through and I had several episodes of standing up on the (moving!!) surfboard for periods of 5 to 10 seconds. This sounds short, but I found it exhilarating and they certainly delivered on meeting the challenge.

From start to finish we were really well looked after, the commentary from Capt Barlow was great, with a good mix of history and humour … would highly recommend. Justine and Keith were extremely helpful right from my first enquiry to them until we finished our paddle boarding session. We had so many children who had never paddle boarded before, and every child loved it!!!! Nothing was too much trouble. - Cat4 contributionsAn incredible few days with the Up Surf Coaching team in Raglan. Willow holds a deep knowledge of the ocean and his passion and enthusiasm for the sport is completely infectious. Not only a wonderful teacher, providing astute observations and effective tips for improving technique, but also created a happy and relaxed atmosphere that made for an epic few days of fun. I progressed so much in skill and confidence even in just a few days. We studied their pre-planned trips and chose one of their North+South Island drive yourself tours as our base. She was very helpful and accommodating as we decided to customize by adding a couple days and extra activities. Once our trip began she remained in contact with us nearly every day with helpful hints and reminders. - Nigel BWhangaroa, New Zealand514 contributionsOver for the weekend and dropped in to have a look at the store , had a chat then when out on the water one of the team needed to be rescued !!! Ozone were there and dragged him to safety..... good work , so later in the day dropped in for a drink and had a couple of Zephyr cocktails which I would highly recommend esp for zephyr owners - it will put hairs on your chest and ensure a long sleep and a slow Sunday. I'm a 51 year old woman who has never fished for snapper before in my life ... so I went out on the boat for the afternoon knowing nothing with a bunch of people who had all fished before and every one of the crew members onboard were super helpful and super friendly and taught me everything I needed to know .. they even bated my line for me so I didn't have to touch the stinky bait ... lol. They took us to the best fishing spot in Raglan and from the minute we dropped anchor everybody caught non-stop snapper and the odd Kahawai and Gurnard until we left. In fact, we left for home early because we had more than enough fish for everybody to take home. It was action packed fishing the whole time and some of the snapper we caught were HUGE!!! I caught about 10 fish and I can't wait to go back again soon, thanks to Darron and the crew at Raglan Fishing Charters. After a 5 minute dry land introduction we were out in the harbour, enjoying the perfect conditions and relaxing into the boarding. With Keith's relaxed instruction, it all seemed effortless, even with my high centre of gravity.
