Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is some of the toughest country on the planet to travel through. We're very fortunate that the time and energy has been put in to this trail to make it so accessible.

For a real taste of how tough it is, carry along the main trail up the Hokitika River for a couple of hours and see how far you get. Fast moving side streams, unstable ground, extreme weather changes, and near impenetrable rainforest. You're on the boundary of one of the few remaining true wildernesses in the world.

Beautiful spot. Good parking and facilities that are being upgraded even further. The walk itself is easy, short and spectacular. The boardwalks are nice and most of it is wheelchair accessible.

Weka hang about in the carpark. Don't feed them please!

Although entire area is focused on tourism, it's worth a visit and embrace the amazing attractions. Landscape is stunning and all the activities an unforgettable experience.

Stunning track! 4 of us hiked the track, staying in each hut and finishing with the amazing Rough and Tumble Lodge at the end.
There was plenty of equipment in each hut- even coffee plungers, great mattresses and shelves for your nighttime bits. The toilets are eco, not smelly and hand sanitizer is provided outside each. Each has an outdoor shower that is delightfully rustic but enough. Quite apart from all of that are the gradual tracks in great condition, the stunning views and we loved that the huts were strategically placed in different elevations.
The R and T lodge is peaceful, generous and well worth indulging post walk or ride. I loved it!

Sadly it was musty during our visit Di we couldn’t see Mount Cook or Mount Tasman or capture that elusive ‘mirror’ photo of them reflected in the lake. However it’s a nice walk around anyway. A bit up and down - takes about an hour.

Great cafe and gift shop near the car park. Free parking and entry.

The views on this walk are stunning. A reasonable level of fitness is required. The seal colony is worthwhile- there were a lot of seal pups frolicking around in mid March.

This is a beautiful store/gallery with quality (and reasonably priced) items. Definitely worth a stop in, we purchased several things here.

Short walk to glow worm dell off of Highway is fun and free. You can get into all the science if it or just enjoy the magic. Must do if you’re here in the evening. 10 minutes or 30 is worth the time to check this place out.

We recently completed the west coast wilderness trail as a group of two couples. From the outset Kiwi Journeys staff entire team were superb in every aspect of their organisation and commitment to ensure a great trip and experience. Their arranged accomodation was excellent especially at the Waterways (hokitika) and the hotel in Kumara. The entire trip was outstanding and my wife and I will definitely use this company again and certainly it has our full recommendation!

Beautiful quick walk to the beach. The walk itself to the beach is enjoyable. The beach is lovely. We went on an off and on rainy day and got the beach to ourselves while there. We went probably mid tide and were still able to get out on some of the beach. Go at low tide to be able to further and with more ease. Lovely small waterfall from the rock face down onto the sand. One of our top stops in Punakaiki!

Interesting kiwi and glacier centre located in the heart of Franz Joseph township. The centre was well done and quite interesting, though I felt it was expensive for what it was.
