Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- icb013Cambridge, UK110 contributionsI'm writing this review after just finishing the west highland way (over 7 days) yesterday! I've done it twice now - first time was 20 years ago with my brother and this week I completed it with my son (age 12) and our dog! Both times were amazing!! I highly recommend
The main differences - 20 yrs ago we completed it carrying all our bags, tents, clothes, food etc.. on our backs! This time, my husband and younger son kindly acted as our courier team, and drove our tent, bags etc.. from one stop to the next! Both ways of doing it are great, but it was a lot easier just carrying a day pack with supplies for the day, than carrying a full weeks kit & tent on your back. There are local professional courier services who transport bags from stop to stop along the route for a small fee, and a lot of hikers seemed to be using these services. I recommend!
Second difference is that I'm sure some of the route has been moved. This time it felt like there was a lot more road and track walking than when I did the WHW 20 years ago. I might have misremembered, but I'm pretty sure some of the route has been changed to divert it onto the road and tracks, perhaps for preservation purposes. It's a shame in my opinion, but if I did the hike again I'd look in detail at the maps in advance and try and find some of the original paths and trails to walk down, instead of going on the road (if they can still be accessed).
Top tips:
*Conic hill is relatively easy on the up section, but the descent is a pain on the knees and feet, so prepare for that!
*The absolute best part of the west highland way, both in terms of hiking and scenery is from Tyndrum onwards - so I'd definitely recommend doing the WHW south to north so it gets better and better every day!
*Our longest section of the hike was from Tyndrum to Glen Coe mountain resort. I was worried it would be too far to do in one day but both my son and I found it by far the best day of the entire walk. It didn't feel long at all, was easy under foot, and the views were incredible. Don't fear this section! It's 19 miles, but each mile was fantastic!!
*If you bring a dog, make sure you bring LOADS of food! They get hungry!! We took too much water for the dog each day though, as there were plenty of streams and he preferred to drink from those, but there are some sections where the streams fade out and water is needed!
*It's a great route for kids. I'd not be afraid to bring a child that wants to do it. My son loved it, though day 3 and 4 felt long for him (Rowardennan to Bein Glas, and Bein Glas to Tyndrum).
*I'd advise bringing swim stuff in case you or anyone in your group wants a swim in the loch!
*Around loch Lomond, when you have the choice, take the high path! It's shorter and easier under foot!
*We did the WHW in the last week of July/first week of august. The weather was mad! We had blistering heat and sunshine as well as wind, cold and torrential rain! Be prepared for all weather, even in August!
*The midges are v annoying! They were worst from Kinlochleven, and midge nets were very handy for the section from kinlochleven to fort William, and also to wear in the campsite at Bein Glas and Tyndrum.
*At the very end of the walk, it's worth stopping at Glen Nevis visitor centre for a hot coffee! (They also sell WHW medals which children especially (but adults too) might appreciate! )
*You can pick your WHW completion certificate up from the tourist information centre in Fort William (again, especially nice for any children doing the hike).
*If you have a dog, be prepared. Ours has picked up a few ticks en route which we weren't expecting and which we'll need help from a vet to remove.
*We planned a few potential exits from the route each day, in case either the dog or my son couldn't manage. We didn't have to use them, but it was reassuring to have a plan each day for exiting the walk early if it had been needed. I definitely recommend planning this, if anything just for peace of mind.
All in all, it was a wonderful wonderful hike both 20 years ago, and this week! I recommend 100%.

However, under no circumstances can I recommend the staff at the Stables café. I've rarely been served by ruder people who behaved as if they hated and despised their customers. Stay away - my family and I will be doing just that. Thumbs down - they're letting the side down in wonderfully friendly West of Scotland.Written 31 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Nan T1 contributionI too, went to visit Mugdock castle, during 'the gathering of the clans' in Scotland in 2009. What a trip that was! I was impressed with the care that has gone into maintaining the park and the restorative efforts of the remaining Clan members. I was surprised at the very narrow steps and the small rooms. I am pleased and happy that I took the time to see parts of my heritage.Written 5 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - macedonboyGlasgow, UK186,766 contributionsThe Milngavie Reservoirs is a popular place for Glaswegians looking to get outside of the city for countryside walks. We usually just start the walk at the western side of Mugdock Reservoir where there is a car park. Then follow the footpath round to Craigmaddie Reservoir, around the Water Treatment Works before returning to the car park, which takes about an hour. The paths also take you through attractive woodlands to complement the views across the reservoir and countryside. The area is quite exposed and windy, even on a sunny day.Written 9 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is a fitting tribute to Jim Prescott who gave his life making the world a safer place.
The bridge is located in open countryside in Milngavie alongside the river Allander. Much of the walk overlooks the golf course and access is from a path near The Allander Toll. A good bridge to watch wildlife from and reflect.Written 30 November 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - macedonboyGlasgow, UK186,766 contributionsThis monument stands in tribute to James Morris Gale, who was the resident engineer in the construction of Loch Katrine as the water reservoir for Glasgow and is also the location of the Milngavie and Craigmaddie Reservoirs. The Art Nouveau style monument features bronze plaque with a profile of Gale, embedded into a roughly hewn block of granite. Supporting the block is a cairn style base of large chunk rubble masonry. The monument is located at the south side of the walkway that separates the two reservoirs and gives a sense of the history of clean drinking water in Glasgow, which we now take for granted.Written 11 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. very reasonable price wise and great communicationWritten 6 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Passenger6545723 contributionsLast year I was delighted to join Mugdock Makkers Arts and Crafts Gallery as a needle felt crafter. For many years I and my family and friends, have been regular visitors at Mugdock Country Park to explore, walk, play and and sample great coffee, cake and ice-cream, then head into the Gallery where we could admire and purchase beautiful cards, gifts, artworks or arrange commissions. The arts and crafts in the Gallery are very unique and made locally with great care, thought, passion and of course creativity. Well worth a visit if you are local to the Park and Gallery like so many of our loyal customers, or if you are here on holiday. At the weekends you will also see demonstrations of the various crafts and arts by a Makker, often have access to regular " have a go " events to make and take away your own craft or art work, and daily meet one of the Makkers as they take their turn on the monthly rota to look after the Gallery and meet the public during shopping hours.Written 13 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael MGlasgow, UK167 contributionsI had booked an appointment for an massage, turned up early and was kept waiting over half an hour after the time it was due to start.
I then raised my concerns and was advised it was due to the people before not leaving quick enough!
When I asked for a refund as I had paid in advance I was told they don’t do refunds but after my concerns I eventually it a refund.
One of the worse experiences plenty of other spas I would look at other places.
