Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Gwen is so very heartwarmingly passionate about her beautiful wallabies and sets your visit up with expert guidance so you can get the most out of meeting her treasured furry family. She also has shoes of all sizes to wear so you don't get your own footwear dirty. (And she's really good at guessing feet sizes!) Choose a sunny day to get the best of the up close and personal experience of a wallaby eating from your hand. Food is included in the entry price.

While we didn't go through the castle my wife and her sister did. They were amazed about the place - they knew it as "Dot's Castle". Their guide was evidently excellent and took a few photos for them - visitors aren't allowed to take photos as it is a private home. They couldn't believe the extravagance of it all even though it has been extremely well made and presented. They did say that the place was full of wonderful artworks, and ornaments and quality furniture and fittings. Evidently it was a dream of Dot and she had a husband who was happy to go with it for her. Our ladies were impressed and suggested that it was very much worth a visit

We were welcomed on arrival and shown the house and taken to our lovely room. We had a fabulous view across farmlands to the sea. The history of the house going back to the mid 1800's is fascinating and our hosts were gracious in sharing their knowledge with us. We had arranged to have a wine tasting with dinner on our first night which proved to be delightful. We sat outside with a platter of cheese and crackers while being fed glasses of wine to try. Delicious.
After the tasting we ordered a bottle of our favorite and proceeded to a well presented, tasty dinner. The chat between the other two guests and our hosts was interesting and fun.
Breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes was a great start to our day.
Our hosts were flexible, knowledgeable, helpful people.

We went to purchase a pot and departed with a pot, another gift and consumed a lovely cup of coffee and very tasty pastie straight from the oven. It was very pleasant in the sun eating and drinking and talking to other customers. Healthy plants were plentiful with many more arriving over the next few days we were told. The owners are very knowledgeable and friendly and make all customers feel very welcome.

We stayed in a tourist cabin which was very nice and tidy, and all the bedding was provided, which was a bonus.
We were under the impression that we’d be able to see animals though, and that wasn’t the case. They’ve sold the farmyard, so they can’t really be called a farmyard park anymore...
The boys liked the playground, although it definitely required adult supervision and could really do with a bit of TLC.

Excellent outlook, and great menu. Food and plating is bit different (good different).
Staff are friendly but service is a bit slow when the restaurant fills up.
    Loved the Estate Pint Gris.

There is quite a number of activities and items of note in the vicinity of this rural but stoic town, and I would say to anyone with an interest in arts and/or architecture to call in or at least have a browse through the window as they take time to wander the main street.
More of a gallery than store, it does feature many quality photos from the region, and Michael is always forthcoming with the how, where and why of his works.
Also a workspace for stone carving, pottery and childrens projects.
The little cluster of antique, bakery and oddity shops at the east end of town add to the reasons for pulling in and having a break here.

Visited on Saturday 28th April. St Patrick's Basilica as it is known because of its style of architecture, was built in 1908-1909, with the tower added in 1912. Beautifully maintained and a credit to the local community in Waimate. Make sure you visit when in Waimate.

On Saturday mornings they have a great little market with a lovely variety of local produce. I buy all my veggy garden plants there for just $2 for six. Lovely to enjoy a cuppa or bring your picnic or fish n chips and enjoy the birdsong.
