Nick took charge of us and for two hours , we splashed and laughed our way down the Tongariro River.
We had a fun jump into the freezing water and those that wanted took an extra plunge and float a wee bit further down.
This was a first class, well run, worth the money adventure.
There were grade 3 rapids that cascaded one after another-and just enough time to regroup before we hit the next one.
Everyone at the base camp was pumped and friendly and clearly intent on making sure we all enjoyed ourselves….which we did.

Staff were wonderful and thoughtful but there were a couple of issues. There wasn’t enough food in the cafe for throughout the trip and in fact, one item on the menu was sold out before we even left the station at Auckland. The other issue is the smell in the toilets which was dreadful. A simple deodoriser would certainly go along way to solving this. Also there was no soap to wash your hands in the toilets. - Russell K2 contributionsThe trip was well worth it. This has been on my bucket list for quite some time and did not disappoint. The knowledge, expertise and all round care undertaken by Stu and Tai, our guides was absolutely second to none! I would recommend this experience to anyone willing to challenge themselves - such a feeling of achievement at the end. However you do need a certain level of fitness and stamina. Do your research, prepare and train realistically and you will get the most from it. My only suggestion for improvement is that it would have been great to be able to buy a cap or T shirt as a momento of the event. Providing frequent updates to us! On top of that they were very punctual with their pick up service! The river ride took us through some calm areas and some grade 1-2 drops which have whetted their appetite for more. If we had more time in the area we would have gone back to do another section with grade 3 thrills too cos the boys ended the trip begging for more! Our instructor guide Lucy was so confident, calm and put us at ease from our point of registration through the whole journey. Lots of Information about various mountains and volcanoes was shared along the way. To just gain the extra star it would have been great to learn more about the plants and ecosystems.
