What travellers are saying
- g nAuckland Central, New Zealand403 contributionsWe took our children (10 and 7) to a kids' fishing day in the holidays. The trout centre is set in beautiful surroundings, you can see trout being bred, and they got to fish with guides with a guaranteed catch. The fish can be smoked as you wait to be eaten on site with or without some hot fresh bread, or you can take them away. A really unique fun activity and well worth a stopWritten 21 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Diane P3 contributionsAwesome scenery & ride. Most enjoyable & interesting seeing the trout at the hatchery along the trail.

Next time will try and stay in one of the towns closer to this mountain.Written 28 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Han_yinuWellington, New Zealand482 contributionsThe baths are currently closed and clearly under renovation. The short walk (about 15 - 20 minutes) which is open and free is located just on the left of the bath facilities is well worth a visit. It has a clear circular path to walk on; keep track of young children and do not wander off the path.Written 25 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Cliff JLondon, UK2,128 contributionsWent in for one piece of information in particular. Staff were friendly as usual and very helpful, answering all my questions and supplying relevant information in a clear and precise way.Written 3 April 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- iizogiiWellington, New Zealand19 contributionsThis was a better experience than expected for our family with a 3 and 5 year old. Both of them, especially the 5 year old, have developed some nervousness about the concept of earthquakes and volcanoes, but they came out of it appearing more comfortable. The video feature about Christchurch required some parental guidance.
Both were very uncertain about the earthquake simulator when we arrived, but by the time we left they were treating it more as an amusement park ride, and it was challenging to get them out. (The rule is one ride per customer, but nobody else was there when we visited soon after opening, so we used it a few times.)
There are many buttons to press around the exhibits. Most only light up LEDs on maps to show where things are happening, but the kids just enjoyed pressing things and seeing stuff happen. There's also a microscope for looking at different types of rock, with a screen rather than an eyepiece, which they both enjoyed.
If there could be an improvement for our own experience (and really the reason for 4 stars rather than 5), everything would have been about half a metre lower to the ground. There weren't any stools nor anything for shorter kids to stand on, so we ended up doing a *lot* of carrying and lifting up to see things happen while they pressed stuff.Written 21 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Lucinda J909 contributionsBeen meaning to do the pillars of Hercules walk for a while. Drove to urchin campsite and walked from there. Took half the time that doc suggested. Good Swingbridge but disappointing views as to overgrown and couldn’t find how to get to the riverWritten 12 June 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- JoySydney, Australia5 contributionsThe gallery is an excellent showcase of the range of art produced in the Turangi area and is very well presented. So impressed.Written 25 March 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- H5055VOrachaelcHamilton, New Zealand8 contributionsJohnny was an amazing guide who kept everyone entertained. Had lots of laughs, and swims in the river. Had kids from 12-19years, along with us oldies and we all had a fantastic time. Great crew at the base also. Well done team.Written 5 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Jaisal VLincolnshire, IL1 contributionI remember doing this it was amazing. I can't remember but I think I mightve had someone named Olivia do ours. She carried most of our packs since we were probably ill equipped. Anyways it was pretty cool and my sister wouldnt have been able to do it without OliviaWritten 22 April 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Priscilla T1 contributionWinter’s day ride with my family! My first time riding in 30 years! Dave and Sami were awesome hosts who treat their horses with love and care. We were carefully saddled on appropriate horses and instructed well! We loved our afternoon cantering through the forest and river trails and would definitely highly recommend them! Thanks guys for a wonderful time on your beautiful horses!Written 1 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Scott EMelbourne, Australia5 contributionsWhat to say about my second expedition with Whiskery Mike? This charter was three years in the making thanks to COVID-related delays.
Mike is the consummate fishing professional and in the morning took my father-in-law and I to the mouth of the Tongariro River for a bit of heave and leave fly fishing. This fishing spot did not disappoint - three beautiful rainbow trout were bagged in quick succession.
We then headed to the eastern side of the lake to complete some trawling and after a bit of manoeuvring we hooked another prized rainbow.
Trout for dinner that night and smoked trout to take home.
If you’re reading this review and contemplating: will I book a trip with Whiskery Mike? Do yourself a favour and get on board. Expect humour, good stories, comfortable vessel and most of all … trout.
As an Aussie with family in NZ I plan to make an annual pilgrimage to Taupō to fish with Mike.Written 20 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Peter TFeilding, New Zealand1 contributionThank you Backyard Tours for your amazing shuttle service getting us to and from The Tongariro Crossing.
You made it very easy for us and it was good to see you waiting at the end with a cold beer in your hand.
Yours will be the first business I recommend to friends and family if any of them head that way.Written 1 April 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Vanessa Morrell4 contributionsFantastic mini putt - 10 of us played today and had so much fun!
