They are currently doing track improvemts so closed some days between now and early May but we went early enough and it was open. Well worth the steps for the spectacular views!Written 14 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- DeborahClarksonHamilton, New Zealand206 contributionsThis is a good place to get a good view over Whakatane. You can get there easily on foot via the steps from Canning Street and following the footpath on Hillcrest Road.Written 25 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- santo tAuckland, New Zealand7,582 contributionsAnother excellent place to enjoy the landscape of Whakatane, from this lookout you can see mostly from northwest to the southwest of Whakatane region, the most notable features is Putauaki, or known with other name Mount Edgecumbe, a volcanic cone rises to 820m above the sea level, at the far horizon. At the front landscape, most of Whakatane Township and Region are spread out beautifully, excellent photographical objects to be captured, amazing views. Two ways to reach this place, an easier way by car to the limited parking spaces near the starting point at 5 minutes’ walk and then climbing through the track 5-10 minutes to the top, to the lookout. Or a bit exercise way by walking start from the city centre behind the huge rock, Puhaturoa Rock, and then step uphill through Whakatane Vertigraph, a 43 horizontal panels on vertical glazed tiles, named Te Mana o Papa, to the starting point is at the end of Vertigraph. Just remember, because this Lookout is positioned facing to the northwest, its best photos captured toward Mount Edcumbe and Whakatane Town is when the sun is rise, at the early morning.Written 24 April 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- AskDrNAhipara, New Zealand155 contributionsThe statue is fascinating and the surrounding rocks and bay and nearby cave are fun to explore and shoot images.Written 29 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Grant NHastings, New Zealand1,266 contributionsPart of the history of the Mataatua Iwi - they have the Lady on The Rock, The Waka, the Marae (and the House that came home), and Muriwai's Cave among others. The cave has an interesting entrance and especially good are the tree roots forming patterns on the surrounding cliffs. The cave isn't that deep (evidently it was deeper at one stage - but the story is interesting and some of the carvings are worth a second look. No cost and easy to get to - definitely worth a visitWritten 26 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
