Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The story of a wharenui fit for a queen that was taken by the Govt of the time and sent in 1870 to Sydney, Melbourne, London and back to Dunedin where it was given to the Otago Museum. It was finally returned in 1996 to Ngati Awa. Needless to say the whare was in a poor condition and had to be renewed before being erected. Today we heard that story with an audio visual display, followed by a pohiri and introduction to the ancestors. We finished with a hakere of fry bread and kawakawa tea.Written 17 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - quiller003Shrewsbury, UK290 contributionsIt's a stiff climb with lots of stepps, but the steps and trail are well-maintained. But definitely worth it for the views over the town and bayWritten 19 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Jackie DWhakatāne, New Zealand68 contributionsThe scenery is amazing and it is a great walk into the township - it has lots of wide space for bikes and trikes etc... the walk takes you along the back of the township so you can stop for a nice coffee or treat on the wayWritten 7 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lawc22Penang Island, Malaysia165 contributionsa nice pit stop for short time towards driving Whakatane. the surrounding is pristine and clean. Nothing much though except for the beach and wooden piers.Written 17 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JevvecKatikati, New Zealand98 contributionsThis camping ground is in a lovely setting, surrounded by trees. We find it very peaceful. The swimming pool is full size though in my opinion the water is a bit too warm to do much swimming but it IS a hot spring. It was very sunny while we were there so we were grateful for the shade cloth. The facilities may be a bit old but they are well cared for and clean.Written 2 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ash R1 contributionJust did this trek today with my girlfriend and it was super cool. We parked on the north end of Seaview road (where it meets Hillcrest road). This is a great place to park as it’s halfway up the hill and the starting point is tricky to find from Whakatāne town centre.
We did one of the shorter loops as a part of the track is currently closed due to a landslide. That being said, we still walked something like 11kms so it was more than enough with all of the hills.
Something I didn’t know before we started was that when you get to Otarawairere Bay you need to walk along some rocks next to the ocean. We did the crossing 1-2 hours after high tide and it was fine. If it was dead on high tide who knows if it would have been possible.
Overall a super cool experience, highly recommend.
Ps you can get some handy maps from the information centre in the town 😊Written 8 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
