What travellers are saying
- Rob SGold Coast, Australia1,220 contributionsBe warned - the hot water part of Hot Water Beach is in a small section of around 50m in front of the rocky headland.
Nobody tells visitors that as you futilely wander the beach, shovel in hand.
The hot water area can get crowded and the sand is so soaked in water it is impossible to build pools.
Caution, the water can be rather hot.Written 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A bit of rock hopping and trekking across the first section to get to the path. The trail then winds up and over. Never too crazy steep, unless opting to scramble up for the higher view over the beach. We did this as we were leaving and would highly recommend stopping for the higher view if up for the scramble. So lovely to see the crescent beach from above. The water was so clear we could see Manta Rays and a shark in the water. We went about two hours before low tide and stayed about 2 after. It didn’t take too long to get to the first entrance onto the sand of the beach itself. It took me about 20 minutes to walk down the length of the beach and 20 minutes back. There were a good amount of trees along the beach to find shady spots for breaks from the sun. This was among my most anticipated beaches to visit in Coromandel and NZ in general and it lived up to the hype and anticipation. It truly is a special gem. There are many lovely beaches along the Coromandel, this one if you are up for the trek off the more beaten path. There were a good amount of people while we were there in middle of December. But it never felt crowded. And if you walked down to the far end you likely could have a larger space all to yourself. Definitely less crowded than Hot Water Beach, Hahei, etc (though we found each of those also lovely). The Coromandel is stunning and well worth a day or a few of beach relaxing and playing!Written 3 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bridget MMelbourne, Australia31 contributionsWe left early to do this as it was a hot sunny day. We caught the ferry from Whitianga and then you have a choice of following the road to Flaxmill Bay, or taking the track over the hills. We did the track on the way there and the road on the way back. The hike is stunning - beautiful bush, but lots of up and down and steps. The track isn’t well signposted. If in doubt, chose the path that goes up! The path is not a smooth even track, so be prepared! We loved it - wonderful views along the way. At Flaxmill Bay we had a coffee at the cafe and then did the loop track around Shakespeare Cliff. This was well signposted. We didn’t go down to Lonely Bay (too hot, too many steps) but it would be beautiful to visit.
We headed back to the Ferry Landing via the lovely old cemetery to get the ferry back to Whitianga.
All up we took about 3 hrs with many photo stops, and didn’t rush. You can also visit Cooks Beach if you have enough time. We even saw a of of dolphins out to see from the cliff lookout point!
This was a wonderful morning hike but it’s worth taking a map.Written 1 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The Woodfired pizzas were authentic and delicious. Enjoyed the wine tasting and bought 2 bottles to enjoy later. - JPYLondon, UK568 contributionsThe views are incredible from the peak, with glorious views of the beaches and estuary.
You have to park in the Paku Lookout parking lot, on a large open green space off Paku Drive, it is signposted as the last point to park. The path up the mountain leads off this space and snakes up past the houses.
It is a very steep walk up but doesn't take long, around 10-15 minutes and it is so worth it.Written 5 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
