It’s well worth making the effort to get to Palestrina (on a nice day). A stunning construction up the side of a steep hill, it has several levels of spectacular Roman remains culminating in the Terrace with views of the Alban Hills, the sea and (far away) the dome of St Peter’s. Behind the Theatre at the very top, the museum contains a lot of rather dull statuary but also some splendid bronze urns and combs, and one wonderful treasure: the Nile Mosaic, a wall-sized pictorial map of BCE 120-110 full of gorgeous illustrations of animals, birds, plants and much else.
To get to Palestrina from Rome by public transport, the simplest and cheapest method is by metro and bus. Get the metro to Anagnina (end of line A). You exit into the bus station, not very salubrious. Get 2 bus tickets per person, from a café or the kiosk (1 ticket needed each way), c E2.80 each. There’s a bus about every half hour, direction Genazzano, and it takes abut 55–70 mins depending on the time of day. You then walk (steeply!) uphill. (Practical details from February 2023.)

Breathtaking views over the valley. A nice little museum attached and the remnants of a massive Roman temple complex.

Highlights were the copy of the Michaelangelo Pieta di Palestrina and the interesting altarpiece. The portraits of past bishops arranged along both sides of the nave were interesting too.

Palestrina as a whole was really a surprise to me. Very nice archeological site, with a museum built around it. This part of the archeological site is for free. Higher in the village is the museum (which we did not visit due to time constraint) and the wider temple complex. If you are in the region, do not forget to visit Palestrina !

Great place to see instruments from the past and learn about the life of this famous composer, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The only drawback is that the information is presented in Italian, however the museum staff will do their best to translate the most important parts into English for foreign visitors.

Their gelato is incredible! Love the cafe lattes as well. So fun to sit outside on the patio during the summer. Friendly, welcoming staff.
