It is a wonderful site, built during the Depression with a world-class Islamic art collection (better than most museums) arranged so that Ms. Duke could live with her collection.
Great tour by the docents and they give you excellent tidbits on Doris Duke's lifestyle....a lot to take in...whether you like Islamic art or not, it's a very cool beach house...try lunch at the Bishop Museum cafe...

RIght across the street is the Hawaii State Art Museum (free admission), which is a very moving and impressive collection that dovetails perfectly with the themes of the palace tour.

When we travel with our son, we like to include museums that will interest him as well (9 yrs old), The Bishop Museum was a perfect fit for the whole family!
It compares favorably to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC.

After touring the museums of World War II Valor in the Pacific, the Arizona Memorial and the Battleship Missouri, this tour takes you to the other side of the US Navy spectrum.
The surrounding museums are free.

The content and calibre of the displays are up there with the Australian War Memorial Anna given this museums size and community background this is very impressive.
The displays rival anything we have toured at the Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC.

With the largest Japanese woodblock print collection outside of Japan and a superb collection of other asian art, this is one of the finest art museums in the world.
The HMoA is one of my favorite museums for its art collection, the venue with its lovely courtyards that invite me to sit and enjoy the quiet sitting on a bench, aside a fountain or under a tree.

We stopped at the Queen Emma Palace on our way to the airport, having been clued by our wonderful tour guide Bruce at the Lyman Museum in Hilo that the spot was a hidden treasure.
I also suggest a visit to the museum shop, among the offerings, are lovely teas.

I have been in about a dozen police/corrections museums across North America.
I highly recommend going in, the staff and officers are so very kind and the articles in the museum are all donated......truly amazing to see the history behind the men and woman in blue!

The museum overlooks Honolulu and its beautiful gardens are almost worth the admission price in themselves.
Exhibiting mostly contemporary art, it is part of the Honolulu Museum of Art (but in a different location).

Very, very well presented; it supplanted my knowledge gained from other island museums & gave a better understanding on the WW2 internal conflicts (internment) endured here & the longstanding effects.
The small museum is very well done with both displays and videos explaining the Japanese migration and presence in the islands.

Yes, you can do most of the Museums and the Memorial for free, but having bought the vouchers through Groupon, we felt it very worth the money.
Matt was an excellent tour guide, extremely knowledgeable & informative of the history of Pearl harbour, we visited the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri, the Aviation Museum & the USS Bowfin Submarine.
