What an experience. We did the walk out to view the glacier and although the walk wa lovely the view was a let down. So we were even more determined to go up in the helicopter and that was nothing short of FANTASTIC !!!!!! well with the cost a once in a life time experience.

An enjoyable walk with suspension bridges, clip on cliff bridge, scrambling rock faces, and amazing views of franz josef glacier and valley.
the toughest part of the track is climbing out of the valley from the suspension bridge to hendes shelter. after that its not as much climbing.

the walk took us 1hr 40 up - with lots of photo stops, and not much less on the way down.

    Recommended in dry weather.

Easy, flat, 5 minute walk to an impressive sight, especially on a clear day! Was definitely worth the wee wander in!

After a steady climb which seems to go on for a long time you suddenly go up very steeply and in parts it is quite narrow. It is not easy and 1 hour 20 minutes return is the super-fit athlete time, not your average joe time.
It's a tiring walk up. Tip - just before the last climb there is a little waterfall coming down by the side of the track - a great place to stick your head under to coll off if it is hot!
The tunnel itself is very interesting. You need a decent torch and when we went the water deep enough to get you very wet feet so have boots or a towel and a change with you.

If it's wet, this is a great way to spend the afternoon. Did the self-guided tour & took our time to look at all the static displays and a few interactive ones. Not cheap entry but a proportion goes to DOC who do excellent work. Also learnt heaps about Glaciers, Rock Flour, Neves etc.

Well worth the steeper path at the end. Great viewpoint but a shame (and shameful) that the glacier is retreating at such a fast pace. Informative panels at the view point show the retreat over the last 125 years.

Nice center with very helpful staff. Ample free parking in the area. Our helicopter tour left from here. They also have a number of other activities that you can book. Good size souvenir shop and cafe. We grabbed a bagel, Nutella cheesecake, juice and coffee for breakfast prior to our tour. At the conclusion of the tour, we ordered a ham and cheese toastie and chicken wrap that we ate for lunch on the way back to Greymouth. Food was good but cheesecake was exceptional.

Starting point really inside Franz Joseph Downtown
Easy trail, no specific view till the end
    You are on rain forest
    Pleasant track, safe
You ll end up to the bridge
You should come back via the same way, you can try to follow the river bank
But be so careful, the water level can suddenly goes up
    Dangerous way

The boat cruise was an amazing experience with an overload of visual stimuli. Two hours of serenity and amazement went past very quickly. Jake was a knowledgeable and interesting skipper.

A short walk (20 mins) to see a small river at the end of it, that you can do from town, we did during the day so didn’t see any glow worms.

The iew of Franz Josef glacier from the pews would make a service very distracting, but also calming.

A great short walk on a good or bad day. There is a good car park just west of the Franz Josef bridge. The walk follows along the flood defences and then through the forest to the lookout near the summit. On a good day you will get a good view of the Franz Josef glacier. Round trip about 1 hour.

Awesome hike, much easier than expected. There is quite a bit of climbing but the track is fairly well graded with no real steep or difficult bits. In fact, the trail crews were out there during our hike, upgrading the trail and doing a great job. It took us only 2 hours to reach the summit (compared to the 4 hours stated on the DOC sign). We spent about an hour eating lunch and admiring the views, then 2 hours back down. All up, 5 hours. The views of the glacier were amazing, especially as we had great weather. One bit of advice though, try to reach the summit before about 11am, as the clouds start to move in around 11am - 1pm. Highly recommended for fit hikers.
