What travellers are saying
- Amanda LAuckland, New Zealand11 contributionsBusy during Summer, beautiful beaches with nice surroundings. Make sure you pack lunch - Katakana and surrounding areas are expensive and not much to choose from eating wise. Make sure you drive right down to Anchor bay for a sandy beach. The rocky area before Anchor bay is stunning, next time, I will bring my snorkel.Written 18 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- WBTKChristchurch, New Zealand5 contributionsA great place to visit , but go mid-week, summer weekends can get busy . Some amazing fish can be seen just walking out in the water or along the rocks on the main landWritten 30 January 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Kiwichick506Bay of Islands, New Zealand18 contributionsDropped in to grab a coffee and rest break. Great cafe and clean toilets. Didn’t go through to visit the animals but had a lovely break in the fenced off picnic areaWritten 11 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- SamuelCareyAuckland Central, New Zealand5 contributionsWe head up here from Auckland as often as we can. It's about a 45 - 60 minute drive depending on traffic, and should be quicker once the motorway extension opens.
It's not undiscovered like some other beaches north of Auckland, there are a lot of houses, but the beach is very long with plenty of room for all, even at the height of summer school holidays.
It's really a great beach - white sand and clear water with a sandy bottom. The swell can get to a good size on occasion but as often as not it's a perfect size for families - big enough to be fun but not too big to be intimidating - our kids (9 and 11) boogie board there a lot and I surf. And other times it's flat enough to paddleboard.
Lots of fun things to do nearby too - we'll always get a real fruit ice cream from one of the roadside stands or from OOB, do some snorkelling at Goat Island, and the cycleway to Point Wells and/or Matakana is worth the effort (the Matakana path has a pretty decent hill in the middle, while the Point Wells track is flat).Written 29 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - Roger KAuckland, New Zealand40 contributionsThere is something here for every taste and every budget. Very friendly and not at all intimidating - a lovely experience. Even if you are not "arty", this is a great place to buy unique and special gifts and mementos. Rick is very helpful and knowledgeable. Follow the yellow brick road! You will be glad you did.Written 17 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- JochebedSingapore75 contributionsGreat place to visit for a forest walk through mature NZ native trees(free entry). There is also a small museum($7 per adult) plus a shop which has beautiful handmade wooden toys & cheeseboards made with NZ timbers at very reasonable prices. Well worth the visit.Written 1 November 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Gay GAuckland, New Zealand87 contributionsLovely walk way along the beach front with well fashioned walkway. What a safe beach and so tranquil today.Written 7 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- DanankaAuckland, New Zealand15 contributionsI took my 9 year old daughter and 2 of her friends for a horse trek here as a birthday treat. My daughter received special treatment as the birthday girl which was really nice for her. All of us really enjoyed the ride and Heather and Lara who were our guides were fantastic. They tailored the horse trek taking into account the girls' abilities and experience. All 3 girls got to trot on their horses which they really enjoyed. The horses were great and the views along the trek were great as well. All the girls were raving about it long after the ride.Written 2 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Duncan WWellington, New Zealand329 contributionsThis was a great rainy day activity and exceeded my expectations. It is MUCH larger than it appears when you arrive in the rather small carpark. Good range of lizards, turtles, etc plus aviaries in natural cages. It took us well over an hour to wander round, and it was possible to spot some of the well camouflaged lizards in the enclosures. Under-rated.Written 7 January 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Kim STauranga, New Zealand531 contributionsWe popped out to the ruins after a bit of rain. End of April and was surprised to see people swimming and as we left more people arrived foe a swim. It was interesting to read it closed in 1929. Some of the trees going out of the ruins were cool. Not too much there that wasn't fenced off.Written 22 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.

- Cindy MBirkdale, New Zealand73 contributionsLovely park. Three nice beaches you can get to with good loop walks. Walks were challenging as both loops have very steep uphills. Was not super busy and had a nice camping ground. I enjoyed the day visit and will be back for an overnight. Easy 1 hour drive from Auckland. Worth a look.Written 2 February 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC.
- Jeanne NAuckland, New Zealand140 contributionsWhat a lovely hidden gem. Visited this place as the historical home has personal meaning to our family history.
Thoroughly enjoyed wandering around the home and grounds and walking around Casnell island at low tide.
Such a peaceful place sitting on the beach in front of the historical home.
Loved the huge tree on the grounds as well.Written 5 May 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of TripAdvisor LLC. - AlbywonSydney, Australia11,584 contributionsWhile it may sound a little parse this is the best first stop in Warkworth. Located on the river, good selection of information for both town and regional area. Helpful staff.
