Be sure to stop at Norbeck Overlook for your first great glimpse of Mount Rushmore in the distance, as well as views of Black Elk (Harney) Peak and the Cathedral Spires just to the East of the US Fab Four.

When you walk out to the overlook on the west side it has a great view, and there is some decent rocks for the kids to climb on.
We didn't picnic here but it was a nice view and we walked the trails.

Needles Highway South Dakota 10.6 km away

Great views of pine trees, canyons, granite pinnacles and projections, lakes, one way tunnels, mountains, vistas, and of course the Needle itself.
In addition to fun tunnels and some pretty high curvy roads, you get a good view of Harney Peak and great picture frame views of Mt.
