Wow! What an incredible museum! A Gunter's chain, a chunkey stone, a Conestoga wagon, and more than I had time to see! I stopped in Marietta on my way to the Cleveland area for the total eclipse and really regretted not being able to spend more time here. The Director of the museum was very helpful despite having her hands full cleaning up the Ohio River Museum after a major flood. I highly recommend a visit!

The admission is only $3.00 and it's very convenient to restaraunts in town; not to mention the wonderfully rich history of the mound-building cultures in Marietta. I was so pleased to see an exhibit in the museum which featured early visitors' (1780's and on) reactions to the earthworks.

Jaye was very knowledgeable, informative and entertaining. She is a retired teacher and it shows! The house was period authentic. It was decorated for Christmas and was not gaudy. Jaye not only shared about various furniture and accessories, but also the social climate and expectations of each generation who resided in the Castle. We’re glad we came.

Despite a hot weekend, we let history cool us down. The artifacts of the beginnings in the Northwest Terr. are super,….even astonishing if you’re a history buff.

Marietta has so many 1sts to see with a backup of historic houses, one right after another. Check out a tour at the Castle and Campus Maritus. The quaint downtown has some nice restaurants like Oysten’s. As plain as can be, you’ll see David McCollough’s actual 1st draft of “The Pioneers “ Book!

This is a five minute walk from The Castle, but the ladies there said to enter via a side door, but we couldn't figure that out, so we entered through the front doors. This led to their hall, which has a small exhibit of some church vestments and local bishop information. Unfortunately the gift shop was closed (it was in the middle of the week); it seems to be open when mass is scheduled. We weren't sure how to get up to the actual worship area, but trying a door labeled "this needs to be always closed" across from the gift shop led up a stairwell and into the worship area. Although I was expecting more pews as this is a minor basilica, it can accommodate a nice crowd. Overall the church is very beautiful; I wanted to take pictures but I don't think they would have taken, as it was primarily sunlight. It would be an experience to attend mass there; we sensed the peace. Marietta overall has a "laid back small town" feel, but this basilica could provide a welcomed respite for tired tourists. Upon leaving we saw some street parking, but a church that size surely has a parking lot? (We didn't walk around it to see.)

Most likely the finest collection of vintage funeral transportation in the country. That being said this tour goes well beyond just the bling. Owner and tour guide Bill Peoples presents a very laid back, comfortable, informative and thought provoking journey through the history of what is for many of us is the uncomfortable subject matter of death. Focus is given on the ceremony of remembrance throughout the years and how that’s changed over time. Not a highly advertised activity but one you should seek out if your anywhere near the Marietta Ohio vicinity. A unique experience you will definitely remember. Don’t be swayed by no set tour times. Just send an email inquiry of when you would like to tour and Bill will get back in touch with you as he did with me. No charge to tour however donations are accepted.

A very interesting side note is that Bill Peoples shared with our group that he is 2nd cousins with nearby Morgantown WV native Don Knotts. That was definitely icing on the cake for me.

We love that this is a cooperative gallery. It features a varied collection of regional art and is run by the people who create it.

From the moment we entered we were greeted by the volunteers whom staff the collection. The cost to enter is $4 for adults and $2 for children. The entry fee is a donation toward the collection. Staff hand you a laminated paper that has useful facts regarding the collection. As you walk around a volunteer joins you and explains the collection and points out interesting facts about where the toy/doll came from and sometimes its origin in ownership. Overall it was a surprisingly fun and informative place to visit.

The City of Marietta does an amazing job of caring for this cemetery. We attended a funeral here and the American Legionnaires provided a military funeral and they were perfect. Could not have asked for better. Thank you all!

Not a whole lot to look at...just the post office building that is filled with junk and a few train cars. But the restaurant next door is worth the visit.

This is a big, diversified flea market. In some areas, it is run down and others very interesting. Went with 4 sisters and we. All found something to buy. Fun !!!

We really loved looking around this very large collection of antique and vintage odds and ends. Prices are very reasonable. Anyone interested in restoration hardware should make the trip!

This is one of those hidden-away urban natural areas. There is a mile-long loop trail that circumnavigates a wetlands area. The trail was in good shape when we visited. A quick hike would take less than 30 minutes. Stopping to listen to bird calls and do other nature area activities could add some time, especially pre-sunrise.

Warning: lots and lots of large poison ivy vines. They were cut back when we hiked but they were thick.

Invasive species: Lots of japanese honeysuckle and multi-flora rose. Scattered autumn olive, privet and wintergreen.
