What travellers are saying
- Michaelk4kSouthampton, UK235 contributionsAlways a pleasure to visit the New Forest. Such history, views of nature and wonderful villages.
Lyndhurst and Burley stand out for sure.
Take a cycle tour or just have a drive around avoiding the wild ponies and horses of course.Written 22 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The location was difficult to find though even with the Sat Nav. However, well worth it especially as it is free admission. All is needed in a small donation.Written 9 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dannie SFarnborough, UK34 contributionsGreat spot for kids and has a dog friendly walk nearby so easy to make a few hours out of it. There is sufficient parking available and on the day we went the ice cream man turned up which was a bonus! It isn’t always open and often says it’s temporarily closed if you Google it however the Forestry England web page seems reliable, currently open now until 4th June and then again between 22nd July - 3rd September between 10:30 - 15:30. 3 or 4 staff on-site to answer questions and help spot the reptiles and a few picnic tables dotted around. There are also toilets on-site.Written 30 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Brian MatthewsWinchester, UK386 contributionsIt is always the way..the attractions that are right on your doorstep are very often the ones you never get around to visiting yourself..you tell everybody else and wax lyrical as to just why your friends & colleagues, (and often folk you've only just met), should take in the attraction, but when it comes to experiencing it yourself....well!.!
Such has long been the case with St Michaels and All Angels Church in Lyndhurst, a wonderful village in the heart of the New Forest that, happily, I have cause to be in, and around, pretty regularly and in whose church graveyard is to be found the final resting place of Alice Liddell, the original young Alice' in Lewis Carroll's famous fairy tale 'Alice in Wonderland.
I've certainly blithely mentioned this fact many times to countless people..but finally I thought it time that I actually paid a visit myself..so on the first decent day in January, I found myself parking at Bolton's Bench, near the War Memorial, at the southern end of the village and walking up the High Street, with the church's spire clearly rising up above the buildings before me, to meet my pal who also wanted to take in the church's famous local history.
So in the company of my friend, (herself a fellow military history buff like myself), we finally made it through the church's front door to be met by a very peaceful, large central space opening up before us, that I wasn't quite expecting.. I didn't realise, only ever seeing the church in the distance, quite how cavernous it was inside!
Very much a stunning church architecturally, though I'll readily admit I was somewhat saddened to see that where all the original pews had obviously once ranged across this ancient building now, (as is the way in many churches throwing open their doors these days as 'community centres'), there were just rows of plain, ordinary chairs...!
Despite being of an 'atheist persuasion' I must admit I do love being in and around old churches that look the part, historically-speaking, and though this particular building is stunningly beautiful inside, it did rather grate that the pews had gone...
But no matter, there was still much to look at, and the first sign of a wintery sun on a cold January day shining through one of the stained glass windows all added to the wonderful ambience of this lovely old building.
As my pal & I, both lost in thought, wandered around looking for any mention of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice', we soon found a wonderful interpretation board detailing the full story behind Alice's transformation into the fabled 'Alice in Wonderland'..!
Finally, I could say I was experiencing this historic site for myself..but we both now really wanted to see where Alice's grave was, so believing the small graveyard to be around the back... on the church's far side...my friend & I went outside and soon encountered a large plot that, on closer inspection, was indeed Alice Liddell's last resting place..a large plaque on the ground in front of it detailing her later married name as being Hargreaves.
Again a slight disappointment at the somewhat low-ish key nature of the grave..though to be fair, I was not quite sure what I was expecting...and it was indeed mid-winter, with just a few snowdrops coming through, so perhaps not the best time to take in this 'locally famous' grave that looked as if in high Summer it might possibly 'come alive' and be covered in wild roses..
With a cold nip still in the air, my friend & I then popped back into the Church to continue our quiet historical investigations, this time looking for signs of plaques or Books of Condolences to Lyndhurst's' fallen in The Great War..when suddenly the sad twist in the tale, mentioned in the title of my piece...became apparent..!
For we happened upon a very impressive and most evocative carved plaque on a back wall indicating that not only did Alice, (Hargreaves-nee-Liddell), go on to have two sons in her later adult life..but both of them, decorated Captains in the British Army, (The Rifles and the Irish Guards), had both been killed..and within a year of each other.. on The Western Front, Cpt. Alan Hargreaves DSO in 1915 and his younger brother Cpt. Leopold Hargreaves MC in the Irish Guards in 1916..
Both were actually aged 33 at the time each was killed in action...and now, (as my friend Nicola later discovered in her subsequent research) were both buried in British Military War Grave Cemeteries in Northern France..incredibly poignant!
To be honest, we were both stopped in our tracks as this was certainly not the end to our visit that we had expected..literally what started out as a fairy tale for the young Alice, later turned to utter tragedy with that loss of her two boys in World War One..I can't think of anything sadder, alas!
It also made me think, later on, with my first job in television in the 1980s being that of Unit Production Manager on the famous local TV series 'Out of Town with Jack Hargreaves'..could there be another a family connection there I wonder..?

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Ian A45 contributionsI visit this treasure trove every time I visit on holiday, and I really look forward to it as I always come away with items, too much at times but that's part of the fun of collecting. On my last visit I found items, that although not expensive or worth much, we're a great addition to my collection. A great place with friendly staff who have always made me feel welcome, thank you.Written 8 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - CharlieCBSwindon, UK811 contributionsAlthough not large, the amount of information about the New Forest is extensive and we learned a lot about the history and culture of the area.
We also had some nice coffee and I pigged out on a very sweet and rich cake which definitely needed to be walked off.Written 27 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
