Superb small aquarium, amazing nature reserve!
We made plans to do the nature trail this trip, if you want to do the nature trail, go prepared, bug spray and water, also appropriate footwear.

Great place to go for a walk, play tennis, pick up basketball......The park has community and public activities scheduled.
The restrooms are clean, the park is meticulously maintained and families are everywhere.

Well worth a few hours to visit... Small State Park with a rich history... harbor protection, Civil War, War of 1812, State Park, then back into military service and finally restored to the state.
After we left the fort we did visit the beach area of the park as well, and it too was very nice, plenty of parking, ample restrooms, picnic areas as well as a lovely boardwalk complete with outdoor showers leadin...

NC has provided a delightful state park to enjoy for free...although they will happily accepts donations.
Fort Macon is by far the most amazing park and historic site I've been to in a long time.

I'd suggest doing that part first -- park in the picnic area, then walk the access road to 306, then right to the trail -- so as not to put a bit of a damper on the end of the loop.
