Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a real community-based conservation initiative well worth visiting and supporting. The local village has been protecting their unique population of flying foxes since 1992 with their own organisation, Kidike. The income from tourists supports collective village projects as well as the organisation.

The bats themselves are beautiful golden-furred creatures with cute fox-like faces and hang in their 100s all around in the large trees. Around dusk they leave in search of fruit trees.

We had a nice guided walk around the small area of forest by Khalid Khamis, the son of one of the founder members. He was very knowledgeable and interesting about the bats and the story of Kidike. Fantastic to see a local conservation organisation now in its second generation!

Lack of tourists during covid has hit visitor numbers and Kidike's income so they can benefit from support.

From the lighthouse you have a stunning view over north part of Pemba! When the tides are right you can also see the sand bank from there!

Amazing hike out to the ruins and fantastic old ruins. Many talkative school children in the town. I was there in 2017.

I spent a few days in Pemba, realizing that the touristic structure there is in development. Before getting there, I had a few challenges organizing my days around what I wanted to do. Until I found these guys. They talked to me about what was available, they organized the visits (mostly full days) around what was of interest to me and also, of course, the most practical. The distances to cover have to be considered in Pemba. Not only did they do that, they also offered somethings unique, like a visit to a fishing village, or one on and island not mapped on google because (I suppose) it almost disappears at high tide. They are very knowledgeable of the place, having been born there. And they are experienced in the tourist industry. I know they also offer the organization of a full trip (hotel, transportation, etc.), but that was not what I needed.
Do not hesitate to contact them.

A lot to see when you go there, East of Chake-Chake one can find the Mkama Ndume ruins at Pujini village (south of the airport) within easy reach by road from Chake-Chake. This is the only known early fortification on the whole Swahili Coast; it is dated to the fifteenth century

Our first diving experience with Afro Divers was absolutely fantastic! From start to finish, everything was smooth and enjoyable. We were picked up from our hotel by Ali, a very friendly and kind driver who shared interesting information about the local plants along the way to the diving center.

When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Michael, the owner and our instructor for the Discovery Scuba session. Michael is not only incredibly knowledgeable and professional but also has a way of making you feel completely at ease. His instructions were clear, precise, and gave us full confidence in the water.

During the dive, we felt safe at all times while still having the freedom to fully enjoy the breathtaking underwater world. We were amazed by the vibrant coral reefs and the abundance of colorful fish. It was an unforgettable experience, and we couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to diving.

We highly recommend Afro Divers to anyone looking for a memorable and safe dive!

Sija and Hagi were fantastic hosts. They welcomed us at the airport and privately drove us around the island in a very nice AC van.
Fish market was a fantastic experience - a true cultural insight into the livelihood of many people on Pemba Island.
Snorkelling and diving were some of the best in the world - a lot of healthy coral, tons of fish.
We stopped at the sandbank for a picnic lunch and had the whole place to ourselves. Sija and Hagi cut up fruit, set up a picnic with umbrella, and sang Swahili songs with us.
They were prompt, helpful, and wonderful hosts.
Pemba island, especially during quiet (rainy) season, feels like a hidden gem. It was one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been.
