Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Park up in the road and walk over to the Cathedral of St Helena. The stain glass windows are truly something to see. A lovely place to visit and remember loved ones.

We took the guided tour—Donna was a super guide, took her time answering questions and was very knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of this beautiful building, and highly recommend the guided tour. The grounds are lovely with several nice picnic tables.

3 of us attended. We paid to do a double load (we sifted until we had twelve 5 gallon buckets of gravel) and then ran them through the machinery. It was a 97oF day, so we only sorted 1/2 the gravel, and took the rest home in 2 bags to look through later. In the half that we looked through at the mine itself, we found 2 that were over 5ct, including 1 beautiful specimen that could cut out at 2ct and 4 others over 2ct. In addition, we found a few garnets, fossils and agates.

I can't say enough about the support and staff. They are great people! Amazing and helpful. We got a tour of the commercial side that was very informative. After we sort the other bags, we will be sending the best back to them for cutting over the winter (when the mine is closed). Their cutting work is great and seems reasonably priced compared to some other options.

Not to throw stones at other places (so I won't name them) but several years ago, we got a giant bag of gravel from another place in Montana that had nothing like the 6 best stones we got here - and we got to experience more of the whole process, which was definitely worth it.

Great free tour of this beautifully restored Victorian home. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. We learned a lot of history of the Helena area during this tour, couched in the context of the families who have lived here.

What a great time we had here! We spend about 3 hours here with some friends and really enjoyed searching through gravel looking for sapphires. Hailey? greeted us with a smile and lots of information about the mines and our choices in 3 differences bags of gravel we could purchase. The 3 options were the same size just from 3 different locations in the area. The Mother Load, where the most sapphires are being found was $100, the next $75, and finally one option for $50. After we made our selections, she helped us get started by giving us all the sorting supplies we needed and then teaching us what to do and what to look for. She was so friendly and knowledgeable! We were a party of 6 and we purchased a Mother Load Bag for $100 and a 2nd bag for $50. We found small sapphires in both, a few that could be faceted, as well as a garnet, and a number of pieces of hematite. In the Mother Load bag we found the biggest at 4.6 carat although a little rough still a nice piece. Haley? was so helpful through the entire process, especially at the end when she analyzed what we had found of value and not, and giving us even more information. I would definitely return. In fact we did and picked up a couple of bags to sort through at our leisure while traveling.

Go early if it’s hot, but don’t avoid sunny days. The sun is very helpful for finding sapphires. Bring water, sun screen, glasses if you need them and maybe even a magnifying glass.

While things were closed, given it was a Sunday, I got a very strong sense of place and history here. Last Chance Gulch just feels more like a nice pedestrian mall, but the history here made this more special and unique to me.

This building is worth a visit, even if it is closed as it was for us, because of its very unique architecture. We could not figure out what it was at first as it looked a bit like a mosque. It serves as the civic center for the city of Helena. Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in architecture.

There are many pieces of art that adorn the Last Chance Gulch area in downtown Helena. While the Bullwhacker statue does not really stand out among the installations in the area, it is a suitable testament to the early settlers of Helena. Ox carts were used to conduct a good deal of commerce with outside cities, especially during the gold rush times and it is nice to see that the role of a bullwhacker is acknowledged. It is aptly noted on the statue that "Driven by noise, the oxen responded to the crack of the whip over their heads and the constant curses of the bullwhacker." There are benches on either side of the status to take photos with the statue in the background.

The centerpiece of this park is a seven ton anchor from the USS Helena CA -75.

Four ships have been name “Helena.” The first was FG -9, which was a gunboat that served from 1896 to 1932. It saw action in Cuban waters during the Spanish-American war, and in Asian waters during the Philippine Insurrection. It also patrolled in China.

The second was CL -50, a Light Cruiser that served from 1939 to 1943. It was damaged at Pearl Harbor, repaired, and went on to serve as a support vessel for the amphibious landings in the pacific including the invasion of Guadalcanal. It distinguished itself by sinking a Japanese cruiser and destroyer. It was lost in 1943 with 168 hands.

CA -75 was a Heavy Cruiser commissioned in 1945. It was paid for by Montana residents through the purchase of war bonds. It served in Europe and China; and was the Flagship of the Pacific Fleet until 1961. Its crew supported crippled children in the Helena area.

The Fast Attack Submarine Helena, SSN 725, went into service in 1987. Its motto is “Guardian of the free world,” and its logo includes the Fire Tower that looks over Last Chance Gulch and this park.

Right in front of the Montana State Capitol is this stunning statue. It’s a man waving his sword, astride a horse. We had no idea who the subject was, so did a bit of research. Interesting Irish background.

We stopped and peeked at what was viewable of this historic cabin on our way into Reeder’s Alley. Built in 1864, it is said to be one of the oldest cabin’s in the state. A nice example of the kind of quarters that the gold miners would have lived in back in the day.

Painted in grey. There are two floors.

They have a huge protection against rain.

They have two services on Sunday.

    They park at the curb.

They survived a fire in 1916 and an earthquake in 1925.

    Worthwhile to see!

Shandell is a professional, trained and experienced massage therapist who takes great pride in her ability to work with each client individually, discover the root of their pain and work to relieve it. She customizes each massage to meet the needs and desires of the client. Each massage I have had from her has been a different experience after which I floated out, pain free. I wold recommend the 90 minute massage to give her time to work her magic. Ocean Spirit is located on the walking mall across from the Doubletree Hotel. Her prices are very reasonable for the quality of massage.
